clanking noise

Hello all,

Sorry if i'm asking a repetitive question but i cant seem to find an answer I'm new here and new to dsm's I tried a search and found nothing so here it goes, I just bought a 95' eclipse rs with a 420a it has 150k miles everything looks good except I'm getting a clanking noise from the engine when it starts and gets louder as the rev's climb. I also noticed that white smoke comes out of the exaust so i know I'm getting coolant into the combustion chamber the power is low when i drive, I checked for cankwalk according to what I've read but it doesnt seem like its that. I also noticed alot of oil when I pulled the spark plug except for plug # 2 was dry I took the valve cover off everything seems ok, so my question is what do you guys think it is or what direction should i go, what could it be? All I want to do is build this car to run high 12's with the 420a in Denver's high altittude I know I have to build the motor but I'm not worried about the money I'm just doing it for fun. For now I just want to get the clanking noise solved and park my BMW for a little while. Thanks I appreciate any info!!!

sounds like lifter tick, try checking the spacing with a feeler gauge. do a compression check it sounds like you might have a broken head gasket.

That white smoke could also mean your rings are gone.

the 420a isnt really prone to crankwalk like the 4g63 is. Where on the motor is he noise coming from?

sounds like a lifter tick but also if your getting smoke its probley a combintion of things...maybe you might even have to do a rebuild soon..
