How fast should the fuel come out when you click on the fuel pump? Seemed to take forever when I did a few gallons. Stock pump on a 90 laser, held correct pressure while running.
 
I'd imagine it would take a while. The stock pump IIRC is rated at max 160 lph (litres per hour). I can't imagine it's pumping anywhere near capacity though with the ignition just clicked on.
 
On a 2G there is a fuel pump test connector on the firewall. I couldn't tell you if the 1G has one, but if it didn't I would make a connector to supply voltage directly to the pump until the tank is close to drained. A lot faster and you wouldn't risk hurting the starter from constantly hitting it with power.

On a side, if you do make a connector direct to the pump, keep an eye on the level. You will not want to run the pump dry for any real length of time or you could risk burning it up.

And yes, 1G's have a fuel pump test connector near the battery also.
 
On my car I have a stem lead attached my fuel pump rewire relay that I use to run the pump, before that I used the firewall lead.

On vehicles in the past, I've used a fused jumper wire to power the pump after removing the fuel pump relay.

You can tell when the fuel is low by using a clear tube off the end of the fuel line. You will see alot of air moving along with the fuel compared to the flow when you started. This way you can keep your pump safe.
 
I agree use the grounding terminal for the fuel pump instead. The 1g and 2g have one.

Also, take the fuel out of the tank with the fuel feed line to the fuel rail instead of the line after the fuel pressur regulator. The regulator resists fuel flow to maintain 43.5psi base fuel pressure. Take it from a point before the fuel pressur regulator and you will get alot more fuel flow.
