ok so i replaced my entire exhaust system headers all the way back, magnaflow cat, changed the O2 sensor, and i passed every category except NOX and i only failed by 39 points (limit was 421 i got 460). This has really upset me only because even the EGR valve seems relatively new and i dont know what else i can do to lower it, i drove the car before the emission for a while to ensure the cat was warm and i put 91 octane fuel in. I only have 8 more days to get this done i really need help figuring this out.

Did you clean the EGR to make sure its not totally full of carbon and its functioning properly?

Dang, change your oil for starters .... do this first then head right over for the sniff test. you don't know how much HC junk is in dirty oil that gets sniffed up in the test.

I went through the same thing. But a tech told me to do an oil change to pass .. in which it did.

and if you're an NT with the 420A, dump that 91 stuff and use 87 since that 91 is so full of additives that'll mess up the test ...

well i tested the vacuum and thats working properly but i have to dismount it from the block to see if the port is clogged up with all that carbon.

and as for the 91 octane i was told by more then a few people to use it, i didnt realize it would give me a negative outcome, so i definitely should stick to the 87??

oh and i got an oil and filter change today aswell as i did a fuel system cleaning and cleaned out the pcv valve so hopefully that all help

one other things i realized today that sometimes im idleing at around 1100 and other times at about 850-900 and when i put it into drive or back into park the rpms jump up and then comes down and stays steady, is that normal?

Yes, if your 420A motor is bone stock, you're throwing away the $$ with using 91 octane and possibly causing your dirty exhaust to fail your sniff readings. But, if you have high compression mods done to it, then stay with the 91 since you need it.

4Cyl automatics have this problem due to the torque load of the torque converter on these small motors.

Thus, the idle RPM in Park has to be high so when you shove it into DRIVE, the idle can be at the 750-850 range so not to lug down the motor or even cause it to stall out if you have your PARK idle down at the 750 range.

They should be sniffing that thing in DRIVE, for the HC and CO mixture will be high due to the tremendous amount of unburnt fuel that is heading out at that high 1100 RPM in PARK.

ON had fairly soft tolerances on emmisions, BC on the other hand is much more stringent.( iknow far too well). Make sure your Cat is RED HOT... meaning u have to be gunning it (safely) for quite some time before testing. HC...high... hows your airfilter? just a simple question,, might be too dirty..

thanks for the feed back guys, and yes my air filter is fairly new and not very dirty at all. as for the spark plugs my mechanic had a look at them and everything was fine, they are also fairly new and the gap is bang on. Ive done a full fuel system cleaning last thursday aswell as cleaned out the egr and the egr port on the block, cleaned out the throttle body and got an oil and oil filter change done at my work. Im goin to redo my etest tomorrow ill let you guys know what happens. Thanks again!

Ok so just got back from my second e-test and i failed once again on nox and it was much worse this time. I only failed by 29 points last time, this time i failed by a couple hundred :( i also went up a bit on the other categories but still passed. At this point im just gonna wait till i get paid friday, have them do a diagnostics and fix whatever it needs right there and then and do the test again. i just dont understand how i have gone up that bad. i also noticed that the exhaust doesnt smoke while idling after driving but if it continues to idle after about 10 min it starts to smoke. Im just getting frustrated.

worst case scenario is you can use some e85.... i was in the same situation, but it turns out the OBDII cut off date is 96 so i was able to reset my CEL before I went in and passed.... the irony is my CEL hasnt come back (low coolant temp)

Can't you just pay the guy more, so he can pass it for you? That's what I did, like they say, money talks.....

A lot of people are sketchy about taking money from people that they do not know. They can get big fines and loose their buisness. If you get that cat good and hot it should bring your nox down. you really dont have far to go to meet regs.

...from allpar.com ...

"High NOx is usually due to a stuck, plugged, or disconnected EGR valve. A stuck/inoperative EGR valve commonly causes knocking because the added exhaust flow the valve puts into the cylinder will cool off combustion, and reduce the chance of knocking. The level of knocking must be too high for the knock sensor to reduce.

Typically, a failed EGR valve shows up as surging and/or knocking at part throttle, but the knocking can occur any time.

Before you go messing with new and different injectors, replace that EGR valve (or check all of the hoses/connections). With a high NOx reading, an EGR problem is pretty certain. Check all of the vacuum lines that lead to the valve (it might be working fine, but the vacuum to operate it might never get there. A test to see if it works is to idle the car, then suddenly open the throttle to 2000-2500 RPM. You should see the EGR valve stem open up as quickly as the throttle did. If it doesn't move or is sluggish, there's the trouble...."

yeah i had to do that with my 1g.. i ran the piss out of it on the freeway right before i tested and passed with flying colors...

good luck bribing.... its super illegal and no one that i know of that works at a DEQ would partake ( i know I wouldn't, that's like stealing out of the register if I were a cashier)

you could also turn the screw up or down (rich or lean) on your MAS...

It's obviously illegal, but if it was the only option....just saying, :hmm: besides, I'm pretty sure that most of the cars that are out on the street, don't pass emissions legally, at least where I live
