I took my car in last week for a smog check. I passed all across the board except at idle my hydrocarbons were to high. Max is 100 and I registered at 155. I recently replaced a dead 02 sensor which eliminated my check engine light and I thought I was good but apparently not. The tech mentioned that I had a slight misfire at idle which as of today I replaced my plugs and wires and I did an oil change no more thank 1k miles ago. Not sure if you guys have any other suggestion that can help me out on passing.
Thanks in advance.

Alright guys so I passed! Seemed like the new plug and wires sure did help a lot. I also drove the car around for a good hour before I took it in and I never turned it off to keep it warm. The tech said my idle was kind of low and raised it a bit and I ended up with 12 points of hydrocarbon instead of the 155 I had on the earlier test.
Had the same problem when I went to register my car right after I bought it. Try removing the EGR valve and cleaning/replacing it. The person I went to cleaned my valve and it passed with flying colors afterwards.

My car failed for the exact same reason only my HC was like 600 LOL. Like smalltown said, try taking off your egr and cleaning out the valve and the ports that lead to it. The guy that fixed my car did that and the misfire left and I passed with flying colors also. :thumb:

Awesome! I'll clean out my EGR tomorrow. But yes rock1t consider yourself lucky! I just hope I pass because tomorrow is my last day for a free retest and I really don't feel like paying again.

And another thing on a side note, cruise your car (if possible) for 15-20 min before your test and try to have them test it immediately when you get there. From the driving around your exhaust system should be warm enough to burn off any excess HC that could be lingering.

Just a helpful hint I got from somebody when I was going through this process. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Yea thats actually a really good point. I made the mistake of just driving down the street to the smog station without letting it warm up completely. This time around I'm going to go for a good drive and then take it in. I just realized I left all my tools at my parents house so not sure if I'll be able to clean out my EGR :ohdamn:

Honestly I did'nt pull mine out it was the guy at the station, but I think you only need a crescent wrench... Don't hold me to it. And if your not the first in line keep your car running, or leave and say you need to pick up some smokes at the store or something :sneaky:

If be the same with 6bolts, 12mm socket with a 4inch extension wrench takes the EGR out quite nicely. (might have to take out the battery to make the job easier...)

There will be a soft aluminum sheet gasket in this setup though.

I use a blockoff plate when I took mine out.

(I heard of wild stories on about ems testing down there in Calif: One was that the CHiPS will pull any car over and do an ems testing on the fly..is this true, or just something someone made up?)

Yes they will actually run EMS tests on you on site. I have actually heard of people getting refferied in Socal, where they will tow your car and disect it to find any illegal modifications . Once they are done, they give it back to you in pieces with a hefty fine :notgood:

I'll consider myself lucky never having faced this. Just the same, to me it was never worth the extra few HP to modify any smog controls. The few speeding tickets I had on the highway were delivered by very well-mannered men in uniform who knocked them down to min category and directed me to traffic school for a no-points violation. Just one clueless local gave me the 3rd degree, staring at the gauges and Apexi, declaring my exhaust system to be 'illegal' (though it has a cat, resonator, and full muffler), threatening to take my car away because it was modified. In the middle of his speech, he was called away on a real emergency. :thumb:
