Forgive the rookie question, but what exactly is the EGT telling you besides the temp of your exhaust? What does higher/lower temps tell you about the status of performance from a tuning point of view. Thanks fellas..

What's the average Exhaust gas temperature for a DSM that's cruising? My EGT gauge reads around 620 degrees celsius which is around 1148 degrees fahrenheit. Are the temps too high or where they're supposed to be?

My car's egt's have always run in between 1300 and 1350F at cruise, so I wouldn't worry about yours being too high. As long as your fuel trims are in line, you won't be too lean at cruise. As for your a/f ratio, is that a cruise or wot a/f ratio? You should be seeing high 14:1's at cruise. You may have to adjust the dsmlink a/f ratio properties.

EGTs are more affected by timing than AFR. You also have to state where your probe is tapped into. Mine is about 1.5-2" off the 1st runner, reading 1400 or so at cruise.

I have tapped in the same location and I read about 1100 at cruise. 1400 is pretty high. I get there after extended WOT pulls. Have you noticed any problems? What do your logs look like?

Zero knock at WOT with an occasional burp at 3200 at low load for some unknown reason, timing advanced 2* from 3000 to redline. Fuel settings are unchanged other than the global modifier and deadtime of course. Fuel trims are within 2%. I have yet to see any problems from this.

from what ive read, as long as you upgrade each component equally and tune it correctly, your egts shouldnt change, because you will be adding more air and fuel at the same time. rather than just one part. if your adding 10% more fuel, and 10% more air, your ratios are the same, but if you add 20% fuel and only 5 % air then there will be a lower temp because there is more fuel which cools the temps down.

the egts are representative of timing, not necessarily the mods you have.
thats why egts are very baseless because everyone tunes there cars differently. one persons high egt is another persons cruise temp.
its all relative.
with one exception, dont go about 1600°F if you want the engine to live, apparently this is a universal limit.

^^ Good post chrisfullwood, I'm recommending you and 2-0turbo for rep points.

I just want to stress one thing that I think RuBiCaNT5X is still a little shaky on. It's not how much air and fuel, it's what ratio they are in and the ignition timing that mainly affects EGT. If you put 11.5 times more air than fuel into an engine your EGTs are going to be higher than if you only put 9.5 times more air in. With regards to timing, retarding causes EGTs to rise.

The combustion temperature problems occur not when you add too much air and fuel, but when you add them in the wrong concentration. The problems with adding too much charge aren't heat related. They are mechanical strength related and the parts fail because there is too much pressure on them, not too much heat.

Just drove back from st. louis to springfield, hooked up a new EGT gauge to go with my new EVO III. I got on it a few times on the highway, and after pulling through 3rd, 4th, and after shifting into 5th the egt gauge went past 1600, upwards of 1700, so i backed out. I am running 13 pounds of boost. do you think i am running to lean? i just updated my profile. thanks for all the help

I have posted about this before as well. Mostly every one told me that was normal. If you watch the guage, usually the temp drops as you start to go faster. Well atleast mine does.

At cruising going 65-70 mine stays right at 1400. Go WOT and I higt 1600 as well but it backs down as well.

I was told this was normal. I have not touched the CAS, and timing is good.

Hi ,

Sorry for my poor english , usually I do seach and I find everything here but not for this problem .

My egt Temp is very high , when I do a pull on highway (60mph to 100mph) my temp go to 1700F .

when I cruise at 75mph my EGT is stable at 1500F

you can see my list of mods here :
List of mods

I have double check my timing mark , set the timing to 5 degre , no knock , I am running a little Rich (10.4 A/F Ratio).

I dont know what i need to do now . My logs with my DSMlink seem to be good .

I think Maybe My EGT probe is defective (I have a autometer EGT) , can I check the EGT probe with a meter or something to see if everything is ok ?

Do you have any other idea of what I can do to solve this ?

If you can't log right now, try reading your plugs after a hard pull to start. You may have a lean condition in the upper RPM 's. High EGT's are also from a hard working turbo, check your drive line for binding and drag like a sticky brake. Although those temps do seem a little high, I wouldn't drive it until you
get this figured out or your gona burn the turbo down if the temps are accurate. And like GVR4592 said where is the probe tapped in?
