Forgive the rookie question, but what exactly is the EGT telling you besides the temp of your exhaust? What does higher/lower temps tell you about the status of performance from a tuning point of view. Thanks fellas..

hey yall, im new to dsms but i recently purchased a 92 tsi w/a 16g turbo 225 walbro, 550s and a small fmic it also came w/a s-afc. ive read all the posts on this subject that i can but i still cant figure out why my egt temps keep going up no matter what i do, i tried turning down the boost, turning up the fuel, and i would change the timing if i knew how(dont laugh, im new remember). it runs good at a cruise (approx 1400 @75mph) but as soon as i go to WOT it jumps to 1600 and will keep climbing if i dont let off. is it supposed to stay at a steady temp while at WOT no matter how long im there. im not trying to have a drag car i just want a dependable car any suggestions? the hi settings on my afc are: 1500/1%,2000/-2%,2500/-10%,3000/-14%,4000/-15%,5000/-17%,6500/-17%. i know the ne points should be different but i cant figure out how to make it let me make changes to the lower rpm ranges. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Your fuel trims seem to be in line but I'd need some info on what readings your getting to tune it that way. My spyder has a 50 trim and the egt's are around 14 at crusie and 1550 at WO but stays exactly there. My trims are around -20% at most with 550s. It seems like you should try to richen up ur 5000 and 6500 and possibly it will lower. Try to do that and see what happens. If not get back to me and I'll try to help you with any info I can give.

On the freeway at higher rpms (above 4k) and especially at WOT, my EGTs go up to 900 degrees C. Is that normal or am I running lean? Fuel system is completely stock with intake/exhaust mods, stock engine with stock T25.

cruising at about 80mph i sit at about 800c. you are probably just about right fuel wise. 900c is right where i run with AF of 12:1 when going WOT 3-4th gear

hey guys where did you tap your EGT port? Runner or O2 housing? If you tapped the runner what is the distance from the head to the EGT meter

Need some advice on what might be a problem

is there any way to lower EGT readings, when I apply 0lbs of boost down the road my pyrometer readings go up and the only way for them to go down is to let of gas
people say that you should add more fuel to lower your egt's. im just kinda annoyed that sometimes egt's will rise higher and faster than liked and other day glide around 1200F
i've ben over 1300 F in the past and would mostly like to have control of egt's and keep the speed rolling. :D

***IMPORTANT****
I also do not have any Catalytic Converter :shhh: and (1 O2 sensor im aware of) and r getting trouble codes for catalyst failure that is on all the time obviously :D

any ideas would be appreciated
EGR valve, more fuel, wastegate issue, Keep in mind this problem occured with the stock fuel injectors, or bad ignition timing ??

I don't see what your problem is. At highway speeds, your EGT's are going to read anywhere between 1200-1400. Your egt's are between these degrees, right?

Yeah, from what I know 1300-1400 is a very accpetable EGT. It will go up when you thrash the petal..thats the way it is supposed to be. I think the upper limit is in the 1500-1600 area

I just installed an EGT gauge on my '95 TSi and would like to find out if anyone knows what the normal operating exhaust gas temperature range should read. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -jAy

When EGT temps go up, shouldn't the water temp guage also rise. Is their is a correlation between the two or do the EGT's get hotter before the water temp rises significantly?

you can't compare the two...

if you're running too lean, you could definately have piston/ring damage without your coolant temp even moving...

exactly, also once your coolant temp gets to full operating temp it won't or well should not rise much more over what it usually resides at. Whereas egt's rise significantly between cruise and wot. Hell even street cruising and freeway cruising show a drastically different set of temps.

What does everyone see on EGT's during normal cruising, say 70. Also what do they see at idle. I am talking about high 14's for A/F during cruising.

I'm at 1300F at cruise and get down to 900F after cruise at idle. I have coated combustion chambers, so that may make my temps a bit higher than yours.

1600 degrees farenheit (or 900 degrees celsius, depending on what gauge you have) is the ideal temperature for making power and safety. 1700 is a bit too high. And I assume you were at wide open throttle going 95 to 100 mph?

High egt's usually result from:
1. running too lean
2. running extremely rich (you'd know it if this is your case)
3. pulled timing

Egt's are a pretty good reading of how your car is tuned so it appears you need some more work in that area.

According to your profile you only have exhaust mods. Is this profile up to date?

What boost are you running your 14b or 13g turbo at? Stock? What gear were you in, what rpm were at when you noticed this reading? Provide us with some more info.

Right now I don't have the exhaust on the car. Ive had the car 3 weeks now and I didn't have a EGT on my TSI. The only thing done right now is a K&N and the air box is removed and a boost and EGT gauge. I was around 4500 RPM and full throttle in 5th. It is a 14B at 11 psi. I got the car for $600 and it has 90576 miles on it. Its had a easy life so I don't think I helped it much. I forgot but I did put stepdown plugs in it and just a tuneup. I do have a fuel pump on the way. I was going to do that before turning up the boost a little
