Edge of timing belt hot and sticky

smells like burnt rubber. Anyone ever encountered this? Looks like I need a new TB cover right?

look for marks on the cover. If it's tough to tell you might want to spray paint the inside

You have an oil leak getting on the belt. Thats what is making it sticky. Check the cam seals, crankshaft seal, and valve cover gasket, first. They are the most likely culprits. Its probably just hot from engine heat.

And replace that belt after the leak is fixed. It is ruined now that it is saturated with oil.

Looks to me like it's rubbing. That's probably melted plastic on the edge of the belt. Pull the lower timing cover and check for wear marks, they will be pretty self evident once you get it off.

Thanks for the replies. Will have to remove the cover within the next couple of days. Yeah, I actually do have a small valve cover leak on the belt side.

For a quick check you can take a PAINT stick (the one with ball floating inside) and mark up the side of the belt oh maybe 4-5 inches. That'll tell ya if it's rubbing. I just did mine but I'll have to check tomorrow or so if it was rubbing as I had suspected the same thing. Make sure to clean it first or the paint won't try on the oily surface. But vice versa -you can wipe oil off dried paint marks.

Heat won't make the color disappear either, as I have marked my exhaust stud nuts to see if they had moved after 1000 miles. Same bright color

I get kinda crazy with paint sticks, I marked just about every bolt upon assembly. Oil filter number, when I modded the door handles I stuck my name in there with a date, same with the engine front case except wrote "NO BS HAHAHA" with a sharpie. It's gonna be awesome if I forget about that.
