I bought a used 91 GSX that came with a few problems, but the price was right :D

Anyways I have been trying to work out the kinks from the engine angle an decided to take a look at the ECU. Low and behold I found 4, possibly 5 extra capacitors or transistors soldered onto the ECU. I have posted some pictures in the hopes that some of you can help me identify why they are there and what their purpose is.

Here are the pics, the last is the modified ECU next to an unmolested ECU.

The unmodified ECU is from a 92 Talon with 6/90-6/92 - MD166262 as the identifier. The modified ECU has an identifer of MD166255 which I have been unable to reference a specific model year to, it came out of the 91 GSX if its in fact the stock ECU.

I also found that in the carfax report that the car had been exported to Germany for a while immidiately after manufacturing then brought back.

EDIT: It looks like the modified ECU was from a NT Eclipse.

As you have figured out the questionable ECU is a MD166255 from a 91-92 model year 5 speed NA Federal FWD car. That won't work too well in a '91 GSX you really want another MD166262.

The capacitors are from somebody repairing the ECU and using through hole replacements rather than SMD parts.

The car runs with the modified ECU however not very well. I couldnt figure out why the factory boost gauge didnt work, now explained, my idle is absolutley horrid, more than likely caused by the ECU. I'm trying to source a new ECU now but not with much luck so far.

Thanks for the advice.

eBay

I've seen them for very reasonable prices if you are not looking for one with an EPROM
