Please update because my rear bumper is doing it. It went from the size of a pea to bigger than my hand in 2 months. I wash my car every week and its garaged.

EE-- you got it, I should hear something by wednesday(5/7/08) at the latest.....BTW, when was your car's manuf. date... I see you got a '97...a pattern might begin reveal itself if it is what I'm thinkin. One more Q... what color paint is on your car?

Silver, here are some fresh pictures. Ill get the build date as soon as it stops raining, I know its a early 97.

Rear bumper has Exploded in no time flat, I am severely pissed about it.

Obviously its not somethin that can be patch painted... the whole car would need to be done
My question is still... has anyone gone through this with their 2g 'clipse and takenit to the dealer about it?
...My friend that I mentioned in the original post DID have Mitsu repaint the car becuase it was a faulty clearcoat from the factory. They checked it by the VIN.

My friend and I have dealt with it on our 2G talons. They're all painted black too so it shows up a lot worse! Never tried taking it to Mits. Dealer though. They tend to BS you around here.

EE-- Okay... yea I think mine, even though being a 1998 model, was manuf. sometime in '97.... I'll put pics of it up. When you see how bad mine is, you won't feel so bad about yours, haha.

2tsis--- I know, it sucks... dealer BS no matter where you're at... its not like they're going to look up all the cars manufactured for that/those year/s and give everybody a call sayin', "HEY!! We realized we screwed up the clearcoat from factory!! COME ON IN and get a free paint job ON US!!", lLOL. But if you can be persistant and play the "games", and they do play games... it could happen:dsm:

Did you use dish soap or car soap on the car?

Yours isnt coming off in sheets like mine is hehe.

I was able to pull of a sheet about 6"x6" the other day. Its pretty angering to say the least. Id thats not failed clear I dont know what is, the paint under it is pristine LOL.

Its stopped raining, Ill try to get a few pictures of me peeling some off with something between the clear and paint. Forgive the crappy pictures, crappy camera in use.

I am the second owner of the car, previous owner didnt say he painted it and I have no way to contact him anymore as he moved to Texas 3 years ago.

Um yeah. You know you guys are talking about a 10 year old car? I realllllly doubt a dealership is going to be handing out free paint jobs to repaint a 10 year old car. I think the black cars do get it worse though.

Well, I've got nothin to lose... so I figure why not...
Just a side note... but there are other vehicles all around that are of the same age and get the same use (hell, aren't even taken care of as well as I have with mine), and they're paint isn't doin this... But I will post my update as soon as I hear from the dealer.... If they don't call by tomorrow early afternoon, I will drop 'em a line. Good luck guys

Yeah my buddies 1997 Black Eagle Talon ESi is a lot like the pictures of the black one below. He jokes about it alot and says his car has skin cancer and how it's spreading LOL only thing that isn't funny is it must be contagious haha my 1995 TSi AWD is now getting it on the hood and front bumper. (maybe the hood and bumper had been swapped with a '97 at some point) Must have been on the roof and hatch of my 95 before too though. I noticed drips in the paint near the A pillar area of the exterior and on the hatch, like the previous owner spray painted it, but it's not that noticeable.

My buddy got pissed one night though and decided he'd repaint his roof with spray paint. Bad idea. Now the roof is flat black and the rest is factory paint.

Like he says "It's a 30-30 car. It looks good from 30ft away going at least 30mph." It's on the right in my profile picture, doesn't look too bad I guess.

So does anyone know the reason why Mitsubishi/Diamond Star Motors don't know how to get a good paint job done?

I think its more of a Dodge/Chysler thing as Chrysler is a majority of the car if I recall correctly.

Anyone know what years Dodge/Chrysler had issues with their paint jobs?

^ I can vouch for 97, with my current Dodge Ram 1500. The whole roof, and about half of the hood are faded, everything else is in good condition however.

EE-- wow... you dug up some good resources...

Its gotta be in their application from factory, b/c evn the newer models have "the cancer"... I understand the external environment (ex: sun, pollution, road abrasion, ect) plays a role for sure... but you don't see hyundai sonatas or toyota celicas of a comprable year being effected like DSMs.

I'll let all you guys know what I here... should be sometime today!!!

UPDATE: I called Mitsu dealer and the guy said there's no recall for it. He didn't sound very professional in his assessment, just kinda repeated everything I said with a negative answer....
....I'm stubborn... so I'm going to call another dealer on Monday... just to get a 2nd opinion.... got nothing to lose, right?

So im tired of looking at this paint job... 3/4 of it is extremely shiny and nice looking.
But... the rear is not so good, i don't even know what to call it!

My cars black and its kinda gray in the back now, im guessing the paint has faded, what im curious on, is by my spoiler the driverside fin right where its attached, the gray/brown nasty looking paint has sort of chipped and now where its chipped off u can see nice black paint. Is my clear coat fading? ill get a picture today when its sunny out. I'm just curious on what i should do. My friend has a 05 evo all white and said his had the same problem, he said the top layer of paint has been sun damaged and autozone has a compound where you put on it and it takes that damaged top paint off and leaves the nice paint underneath it.
Anyone got any ideas?

Yep, the clearcoat has started to let go. Best thing is to 600 grit wetsand the car down (if you don't have any body work to do) and repaint (X-13 is the Calapana Black Mitz code) with a good base/clear paintjob.

Rubbing compounds work, but only temporary since paint jobs do get tired, worn out and need the full overhaul task to look back to new.

...just my 2 cents worth, but get some professional ideas around where you are at.
