there is a lot of white, black, red cars that are paintedform the factory with a 1 stage paint
(pigment&clear in one step) anything that has metel flake, pearl in it a 2 stage paint base coat clear coat

easy way to find out on your car is to buff it with a electric buffer and see if the foam pad turns white if it does no clear coat

Don't you mean if the pad turns white there IS clearcoat?

I thought base/clear has been standard for ~20 years now

dmak asked the question and his car is white, so base and clear will leave the same color in the pad.

I have a glossy black talon and it is getting sun spots. It's not getting chicks attention like it used to. I'll put some lotion on it in awhile.

If your car is factory painted it has clear coat If it was painted by a decent body shop it has clear coat If you found a guy to paint it for you in his garage it may not have clear coat. Even if you have pearl you should have a clear coat over top or the clear coat has been tinted with the pearl. I have seen your car Danny it has clear coat.

Base-clear is a single stage paint...it has clear mixed into the paint for UV protection. It's not as deep a finish as a base coat/clearcoat. If you have a single stage paint it will show paint color on the buffing pad. If a basecoat/clearcoat is buffed with too much rubbing compound, too rough a pad, or you press too hard on the buffer and create a burn-through effect.

how do i restore my burnt through clear coat? i still have paint but theres no clear left its roasted white. :toobad:

I don't see why you couldn't.

My car suffers from this affliction as well. Is your car black by any chance? I've noticed that most who have this problem are.

its blue and the clear has worn away down to the flatblue with some white burnt clear around the edges should i try and buff it or just sand it so its all smooth and re clear it?

the only fix is a wetsand, and you need to know what you're doing. Buffing will just burn it more...(buff=heat=burn)

again I stress...you will NEED a wetsand, but it will fix nicely. Then a machine polish with a clear coat restorer at a slow speed will bring it back to life.

want a safer better way, highspeed buff with 3m microfinish compound, then high speed buff a layer of paint sealant on it. It will look brand new.

buffing it will not make it worse, thats how detailers get oxidation and burn out of clear coats. i would know i have done it on many cars, plus you can hide a lot of damage to the paint with a high speed buff that won't show up for a month later, after the car is off the lot.

ever wonder why some used cars have buffing swirls like mad on them but they shine like crazy.

lambs wool bonnet, high speed buff not orbital remember that, i don't think orbital will do anything, last time i used an orbital buffer i threw it out cuz its useless, its just a lazy way to put wax on a car and take it off, high speed is the only way to go

i have seen people do the wet sand thing, if you are not experienced with it you will mess it up, see it done many times and had to fix it many times with the high speed buffer. also deep swirls are from pressing to hard, usually done when in a rush, let the wieght of the buffer take care of it and go slow, the buffer will do all the work, but don't sit on one spot to long keep it moving

styx, if u could give me a step by step instuctions that would be great cuz this is my first time at restoring paint

high speed buffer, these just spin in circles about 2500-4000rpms, lambs wool bonnet, 3m microfinish compound you may need to look around for that. apply to surface, turn buffer on then put on car and work it around, keep it moving, eventually you will see the surface shine like it has a clear coat on it again then wax it or put a paint sealant on it. for the first month you may need to do this more than once, then eventually it won't come back after a few times. just don't press hard and keep it moving, with a little practice you will be a pro, this is like an art practice it, once you catch on you can work wonders, even work out scratches down to the primer, that takes me hours to do, best way i can explain it, is like, its kinda like melting the paint on the car.

i bought a cheap buffer at sears for about $60 or 70 one time because i broke an expensive one and need to get the car done, it didn't work to bad, only that sucked about it was it was a 2 speed, i think it maxed at 2500rpm. the only way you can learn is to practice with it, thats all there is to it, its not hard, pretty straight forward. similiar to orbital buffing.

hey guys i went to some body shops and ive come to the conclusion that because the clear is completely gone in some circles i have to wet sand the burn off and re clear it. im thinking of buying some dupont spray clear and clearing it my self then ill just have to wetsand the new clear edges agian. do u think this will look semi decent?

Well i got steal deal on a CF hood, only possible problem is that it's one of those cheaper versions (non VIS) where only the outside has a layer of CF and the rest if fiberglass or resin what not. Soo yelowing is my main issue.

Is there any product that can be applied over the clear coat that is ment as a UV blocker?

BTW stay tunned for pics.....red 2g w/ CF hood and all black 98 talon hatch coming up

Bring it to a body shop and have them spray it with a coat of clear, anything less really will not do the job.
