Dying / Failing Clear Coat [Merged 7-8] cote clearcoat paint dead flaking peeling rot

So I noticed that this oxidation area only on my hatch was starting to get bigger and I planned on getting it refinished when I get my bumper/rear painted next spring. But I recently picked a little at it just to see how much clear was left on it and a small part flaked off exposing the base coat. sooo I took a bit of tape and covered it up. bad idea.. the tape flew off while driving and ripped of a nice square area of clear exposing the base. My question now is do you guys have any tips about what I should do? I was thinking about removing all the clear and taking some of this performance gloss enamel and sprayin it on there, probably just a temporary til the spring. ??

down to the metal?? im no expert at all but its seems only the clear coat is oxidizing/peeling, so wouldnt i be able to go down to the base, which is fine, and seal with my enamel paint??

if its only in the clear ya but that square spot where the clear is missing looks like the base is contaminated also. I would go down to metal just to be safe. dont want to put new paint on just to have it come back through.

yea I might do that, im pretty sure the base is completely fine though because thats why im writing this I just exposed all that base earlier today so its very recent. I also read that instead of repainting with my enamel I should try polishing and waxing over whats left?? I think im going to paint over with the enamel then try applying light wax even on top of that once its fully dried.

My rear bumper was in kind of bad shape as it had some cracks in the clear coat. Today a guy rolled into me at a light and scraped it up a little more. Is there anything I can do to restore it or prevent any further damage? The clear was cracked from impact and came off in a couple of spots. I don't really care about it but if their is a cheap solution that will help a little bit I'm all for it. Pics on request (I'm too tired to take them right now).

The car that I am picking up tomorrow suffers from the same problem. What I am going to do is wet-sand off the last traces of the clear coat in the affected areas of the car and then out about 5 inches using progressively finer grit wet/dry sand paper on blocks, then spray primer over what's left of the paint and metal, feather the paint in, clear coat out to natural lines in the body with the clear and then wet-sand with 1500-grit, fine rubbing compound, polish then wax. Then again, I'll be using spray equipement so I should be able to get down a good thick layer so wetsanding is an option for me.
-that was my plan too because i have 2 areas about the size of CD's where the clear coat is comeing off i hope wet sanding and alot of TLC will be able to fix the problem but im not expert painter

Having a black car is bad enough...but about 1 1/2 years ago my 99 hood stock clearcoat started to spider crack and spread pretty bad within a few months (no pics of crappy hood). I got the hood and the 2 front quarter panels panted a year ago. The cancer seems to spread though:

Anyone else experience this clearcoat cracking...? I did overheat once when the return line to the radiator across the exhaust manafold split and thought that heat might have caused it...

To say the least, the clear coat cracking has been a DSM plague from the 1G T, E, L (VR4)through the 3G Eclipse (mostly the Lasers and the 3G Eclipse). I've seen many bring this issue up to the dealership (forum stories), but it is at the dealership's descresion whether they fix the problem or basically say "sucks to be you!" I do believe there is a TSB on the problem, particularly with the 3G Eclipse, but have fun trying to fix the problem at Satan's expense. If you complain enough, you may get some satisfaction.

I own a 92 Laser, 91 VR4, 90 Eclipse, and 01 Eclipse with this problem. There are a few people that have had the dealership fix the problem, but they will only fix the problem "AREA" and NOT paint the entire door, hood, car, etc. After looking at your pictures, the sight is all too familiar.

For a point of interest check out http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=227042. I may try this as a fix for the problem.

I'm actually doing the 50 dollar paint job in white and its turning out pretty nice...

My dads 03 Wrangler is starting to spider crack on the hood and he's religious about waxing. Pretty shitty how Chrysler isn't fixing their issues. Same domestic quality shit, different year.

My 95 ESi is black and I had a spot on my roof in the right front corner about the size of the one you have on your spoiler. Within 7-8 months, the entire roof, the rear decklid, the hood and the top of the left quarter panel all had major issues.

I took my car to Maaco and for $615 they sprayed my car wich included stripping the affected surfaces to the metal and filling in a few of my mistake drill holes from mounting my 2gb Talon spoiler. Very pleased with the results. Very little overspray on the bottom of my headlight and on the bumper corner lights that they addressed right then and there.

down south black cars dont last in this heat to well some do but most dont

Yep...this car spent it's 1st 2 1/2 years @ Ft. Bragg through those nasty hot summers...it took me a while to realize that applying a coat of wax over there and then buffing it only introduces the swirls into the clearcoat...the sand is so thin in the air, it sticks to the wax and then swirls as you buff it out...

My 99 gsx just started this. I have strips along the roof ridges that run parallel to the doors, and a spot on the rear passenger side of the roof about the size of a fist. Uh-oh better get Maaco hehe. I probably only waxed this car 2-3 times a year in the time I've owned it (since 2001) so I didn't take the best care of the paint :(

Hi all...FYI searched this, but couldn't find any similar thread on my question... ANYWAYS, haha

My clearcoat has been receeding for over 2 years now...Looks like JUNK.... I don't really want to go the Maaco route.... but I overheard this from one individual last week...

"Had the same problem with a 2001 galant...took it to the dealer and complained... appently its faulty clearcoat, but its not a "Legit" recall..."

Guy said something along those lines... anyway... Have you heard of this???? Appreciate any feedback! THANKS!!!!:dsm:

Yeah its called clearcoat failure. Do you protect you car with any wax or sealant of wash it weekly ???

ROFLROFLSorry, i couldnt help but laugh when i saw the receeding clear coat. It might be from washing and waxing your car to much. Maaco paintjobs are hit or miss. I've seen some nice ones, and some not so good. For the money though why not try;)

Its not from washing and waxing the car.

Obviously its not somethin that can be patch painted... the whole car would need to be done
My question is still... has anyone gone through this with their 2g 'clipse and takenit to the dealer about it?
...My friend that I mentioned in the original post DID have Mitsu repaint the car becuase it was a faulty clearcoat from the factory. They checked it by the VIN.

I will update on my status, so that in the future someone will be able to use this as a searched reference if they find themselves with the same problem.....
.... Called my local dealer today and left them with my VIN# ..... guy reacted like it wasn't news to him... Will update later on this week....:dsm:
