So I have had my DSM for a month or so, its a 96 2gnt with around 130K on it. The other day I noticed that around 2500rpm there begins a clicking, not a clicking like valves hitting the tops of the pistons because I jumped a tooth or something, it deeper. More like a clank if you get where I am going. It only intensifies when the engine is revved. It is directly tied to engine speed.
I immediately stopped driving it, haven't driven it since. Had it checked out by my mechanic and he said that I should look for a new car or new motor.
Anyone have any suggestions as to how to repair it, or a good place to get a motor.
I would do the stuff myself, but I need to get it fixed since my only other vehicle is a motorcycle and spring is too rainy to rely on it.

I suppose its good that you say that, b/c thats what 2 other people have said.
What kind of difficulty is that to replace? Am I better off just paying $1800-$2000 for a new motor?

I would say to get a Haynes Repair Manual first thing. Reseach it before making any decission. There's a lot write but you may find more info in v-faq and the formus on this site.

GOOD LUCK AGAIN!!! Len:(

The manual # is 68031 haynes you can pick it up at pep boys, auto zone, etc.
Have you ever done any work on cars before???

I have done some work on cars (installed a supercharger, replaced valve springs, camshaft swap) but never anything that far inside the engine. I generally only do projects that can be completed in a weekend at the most.

@hdoerr
I would like to have my mechanic take it apart and see whats up, but that would be quite costly, especially if the conclusion was, buy a new engine. Thats why I wanted as much preliminary advice as I can get.

There's a lot of knolegable people on this site. You may be able to find someone close to you from the site to look at with you. I would search around and see if you can find someone to give you a hand most people are willing to do so. The worst thing is you dont have another car to drive in the mean time so it make for a pain in the butt. I would offer to give a hand but i dont plan on goin down south any time soon.

does kinda sound like a rod bearing, but obviously cant be too sure. look into how extensive itd' be to replace it, which i know its not easy. possibly not even worth the repair...:|

If you can't afford replacing the entire engine, you could look into just a used block. I'm in the process of replacing my engine now and you need to remove most of the difficult stuff for a swap anyway. The only benefit of an entire longblock is that it might be setup for the correct timing, etc, but you usually replace that stuff on a swap anyway.

I got my stuff from thedsmgraveyard.com because there are none available in my area for a decent price.

Another thing I forgot to add is you could possibly go to the junk yard and find a used 420a motor there and it would be a hell of a lot cheaper to.

GOOK LUCK AGAIN!!! Len :D
