Dump tube cut mod has left me confused! (missing something)

Hey guys, just cut my dump tube out by following the guide on vfaq! It's basically my first "mod" and I thought it'd be a good project to get my feet wet with. I figured it all out myself, used some jb quik and put it all back together feeling very happy with myself.

What did annoy me a lot though (and this is not the point of this thread, just something I wanted to say)... was that it made my BOV silent :mad: I really liked that little hiss and I miss it a lot =/


Anyway while I was going about the mod I noticed my intake tube thing is missing a hose going into it!

As you can see in this pic, there are 2 going in the top (or left side from this perspective) of the tube and I have those

And one going in the bottom (or right). However there's nothing there for me, just a hole

My question is: What is that? Do I need it? and why the hell is my bov silent :cry: (okay ignore that last one, but really.. the missing tube?)

i think the 3rd hose is on some of the earlier 2g cars 95-96. and it made it quiet because you removed the hard piece of plastic that was helping restrict the air.. but that tubes there for a reason to help direct air bacak AWAY from the MAF....
 
In no possible way will the air turn around in the intake stream and go towards the MAF.

Restrictions are used to cancel/deaden noise, much like helmholtz design mufflers.

It's design is to help direct the sound from the blow off valve away from the air-filter so it is not heard.

If you want a louder turbo/BOV sound get hard piping.
 
Hah, that's the last thing I want to spend money on right now... a sound.

This just seemed like a fun little project to do in my spare time :thumb:

My $$$ will be going towards fixing an oil leak, I'm hoping it's not low down in the engine... please be a camshaft seal or something :pray:


And you guys are saying that because my car is a 98 it doesn't need/have that hose? That's a relief.
 
If you're referring to the third nipple on the stock air hose... the one closest to you when standing in front of the car with the intake installed on the MAF, it was connected to the factory BCS on my 99 gsx.
 
Just a thought. When I first did this mod, and while removing the smaller of the three vacuum hoses the nipple itself actually came off with the hose. Like I said earlier, that small hose is connected to my BCS, which could have affected how you car boosts, which in turn will affect how the BOV will sound/work/ect.

Check your BCS for loose vacuum hoses. And, if by chance you do have a nipple there with no air hose connected will pretty much equal a HUGE vacuum leak.


*EDIT* I missed the part where you said, "There's just a hole." That ain't just a hole. It's one bad ass boost/vacuum leak. Sounds like what happened to me, the nipple itself was pulled out when removing the vacuum hose. Find your BCS by removing the coolant overflow bottle, look down and bolted against the wall should be a little box with 2 vacuum hoses connected to that. Check those hoses. When the mod is properly done, the intake and BOV noises should also increase. Atleast it did on mine.
 
I looked for stuff hanging down there that should be connected, but I couldn't find anything. There was a little black box like you said, but it had nothing in it... I think the thing was hanging out underneath it. (you can kinda see what I mean in this pic). But yeah, I have no idea which hose I should be putting in here, I can't find any that would go.

Should I just plug it up?

That little box with the hoses on it is the factory BCS. From memory, one is connected to the compressor housing and wastegate, and the other is connected to the air intake hose. Make sure that those 2 hoses coming from the BCS are connected to something. I am almost certain that one of those hoses are connected to the air intake. Also, I do not think it's wise to "just plug it up" because the BCS, from my point of view, appears to want to see vacuum from the hose connected to the air intake (the one you are missing), and boost coming from the turbocharger. I'm assuming it's using those 2 readings to somehow control boost pressure. Therefore, I do NOT recommend just plugging it up.

Also, in the pic, the BCS is the one with the nipple on top with the 2 hoses coming off of it. Not the one directly above the lower intercooler pipe in pic #2. It's the one with more of a cylindrical shape to it. That upper vacuum hose is the one connected to the air intake.
 
Where does the end of the hose off the top nipple on the BCS go? I'm guessing it's just chilling there waiting to be reconnected.

Actually, one end connects in a T-fitting between the wastegate and the nipple on the compressor housing. It bleeds off pressure through the top nipple to the air intake to keep then WG from opening. When the solenoid closes, the pressure in the line between the compressor housing and the WG builds, and the WG opens.

I remember looking at that teed of hose wondering what that was.

As for the one you think could be just chilling around, I'll go take another look at it. I gave it a tug to see if it was free but didn't move very much so I assumed it was connected.

Just gotta finish this pie :thumb: then I'll go back outside and take a look


edit: okay so looking at your pic you're basically saying go find that little cylinder thing with the 2 hoses, and whichever one isn't teed off, go put that one into the intake?

Knochgoon is right. Trying to remember from memory since I converted to an electronic boost controller with a whole new solenoid and I was actually following an electrical wire that slightly resembles a hose. Thanks for catching that one. :coy:
 
Thanks a lot you two! It was that hose! It was caught on something, so when I wiggled it to see if it was attached, I thought it was. It's now hooked up and everything is all good!

... except I still don't hear my bov :(

also, would that sensor have anything to do with my mpg perchance? I've been getting terrible mileage ever since I got this car. I put $20 in the tank, it was 1/4 full, the 20 filled it... then about 170 miles later I needed to fill up again WTF I've heard of people pulling at least 200 on a tank. Hell I used to get that in my ford ranger, and that wasn't on premium :confused:

If you have a MBC, just put a screw into the hole with some RTV to seal it up nice and tight. If you don't have a MBC and are still using the BCS then it needs to be routed back into the intake stream.

Edit ^ all that is useless now that you have it all figured out.

Replace your BOV with a 1g BOV. The stock 2g one is plastic and leaks at a very low boost pressure. If it's leaking all of the pressure you're bypassing with the BOV will make your MPG go down. Do a boost leak test to find out any leaks and to find out at what pressure your BOV leaks at. Oh yea while your at it, replace your O2 sensor. <------- (#1 cause of bad MPG)
 
How much is an O2 sensor for a 2g? I ask 'cause I'm broke :p

Also i know for a fact my bov is terrible because I took the recirc pipe thing off, started the car, and could freaking feel the air getting leaked out at idle ::ohdamn:

It's a newer version of the type S, did some research on these guys and they seem to be ambitious and not just another ebay company. I'll have to post a review when I get it.
 
Stock O2 sensors from O'Reilly auto parts are around $60.

Also, don't bother with that BOV. Just get a 1g BOV. They have been proven to hold tons of boost without leaking especially after modded. I just did a boost leak test today and my DG modded 1g BOV held the 30psi I was feeding the IC piping with my compressor. Works great, holds boost, and dumps it when I need it to. Plus, I actually just bought a used one on here for about 25 bucks. You say you're broke.... So, why spend more money on a crappier bov? Just to replace it later with something better? (1g BOV)
 
I personally wouldn't mess around with any knock-off brands. I've actually used an Evolution 8 OEM valve at one time with no problems. It held way better than stock 2g. They're both plastic but Evo8 held more boost. I believe the EvoMR had a metal version. Also looked VERY stock if you like it looking unmodified. Plus, it was a straight bolt-on. If you're going to use a 1g you'll need an adapter, not that it's a biggie.
 
If you want to hear your BOV, get an open element filter and a 1g bov. That should take care of the sound.

Get your self a boost gauge and ill give you my spare MBC.:thumb:

I'm not too concerned about the sound, it was just a fun thing to have. I'm planning on buying an aluminum intake off ebay for like $50, one with the ability to recirc & comes with a cone filter. I'm still undecided on the bov, I can't deny that 1gs are very good, but I do want to have some fun with the car, so I think the sound that the ngr bov makes is pretty neat.

Thanks for the offer on the mbc, I'll defiantly take you up on it. Planning on getting a boost gauge after I get a bov that doesn't leak.

edit: oh yeah, I didn't know this was your dream car :p It's a great car. Big dent on the back and a cracked front fender, but other than that I'm really happy with it. Rebuilt engine with only 10k on it :hellyeah:
