I just got my 97 tsi two days ago and decided to try the bov dump tube mod as listed in the vfaqs. The mod was suposed to increase power (minutly) and magnify my stock BOV's sound. I got my little increase in power but the BOV's sound in less distinct than before the mod. I'm not so worried about the sound as I am that I broke or damaged a part of the intake/airflow system. Any imput on why this is and or how to fix it would be apperciated.

as long as there are no gaps in between the tube and the intake tube(as in, sucking in unmetered air) than you should be fine.

some people say the return tube cut makes the bov quieter, some say opposite. mine got a wee bit louder(little more crisp sounding on a greddy S).

on a stock bov, cutting the dump tube will make it quieter. I don't know how/why/where the information about it becoming louder came from, but if you search, you will find everyone is shocked when it is actually quieter then before.

Think of it like this, when you blow down a long pvc pipe it is a loud echoy sound, but say you blow down a pvc pipe of the same diameter but only about 2 inches long, you won't hear anything because there is nothing for the sound waves to bounch off of. You do these mods for performance not for rice :nono: . If you MUST have a louder sound then do a search on here for a hard recirculate pipe made out of pvc or out of metal. It will give it a louder whistling sound due to the material.

Hmmm, I guesse it does make since that it would be quieter since there is less material for the sound to resonate off of. Thx

Build a metal recirculation fitting....you can have the supplies from Lowe's for less than $10. I have a crushed 1g, letting off at low boost induces a little flutter you can hear pretty well..

You're absolutely right. Before I got my HKS, I did the dump tube cut to make the diverter valve louder. But it turned out that it was quiet as hell. It sounded exactly like a 1.8T V-DUB

Phew!

I stopped 3 times on the way to Best Buy because i was sooo scared i meesed up my BOV and it was leaking. I have a stock BOV (still looking for a stock EVO bov to stick on - i guess this is a little better than finding a 1g and "crushing" it). I can't imagine what i could have messed up though, i took a hack saw to the dump tube and stuck it back in. Logic (for me) dictates that the dump tube does NOT need to be glued back on, because these intake parts will never hold pressure (it'll just go back out the MAF and filter, right???).

I checked all the vacuum lines in case i pulled something loose 3 times and everything looks great. Then finnally on the way back home from BB i was able to hear the dump from the BOV (it seems the hack job i did on the airbox made the engine so much louder that my normal shift at 5grand i couldn't hear the air rush out the BOV). but i heard it. so i'm getting used to the new sound.

Since many FAQs state that cutting the Dump Tube will make your BOV louder, i will add the caveat (sorry in advance for all caps ) : CUTTING YOUR DUMP TUBE WITH A STOCK BOV WILL MAKE IT HARD TO HEAR THE DUMP.

Please correct me if i am wrong, and tell me if it sound like i DID mess something up.

Thanks you guys. I'd still be running a stock :dsm: if it weren't for this site.

The evo 8 bov's are plastic. If you upgrade to an evo bov you want to get the MR bov. Someone Correct me if I'm wrong.

No, you're right. Same thing happened on mine.

i got my intake used with bov and the tube was already cut... couldnt hear the dump at all.. switching to a k&n style filter changed the sound (like a pigeon und the hood LOL)

About the question i noticed how much louder my BOV was when I replaced the stock filter with the Vibrant Performance cone filter.
