DSMlink functions with the ecu, not the crank.

i like all the features this offers but the ricer in me wants to vent. could i use a gmaft blowthru steup with dsm link. or will i have to keep the stock mas?

Which ECU are you running? DSMlink has nothing to do with what engine you have in your car.
 
So does the 1G DSMLink allow the use of a 2G knock sensor or are we going to have to rely on the slow refresh rate of the old sensor?

I don't see anything on the website, and I had given my information to be on the waiting list and didn't actually receive an email.
 
"The knock sensor on the 1st Gen DSM's is not very sensitive. The factory ECU seems to "count" any sensor movement at all and sum it over a long time. Anyone who is familiar with the 2nd Gen sensor and the AEM will expect a very large response to any sort of knock while the 1st Gen will only give a very small output. To make it useful, you pretty much have to make the knock noise table zero everywhere and make darn sure that it's not knocking. "

Maybe refresh rate wasn't the correct term to use. What I meant was what is said right above, taken straight from the AEM forums website.

i emailed them, and they are expecting a standard release to everyone at the beginning of dec.

Well, that's nice seeing as how were not talking about the AEM.

AEM built the EMS to use the 2g sensor, for what ever reason.

The 1g ECU was built to use the 1g sensor.

If real world results mean anything, it would appear that the 1g sensor and 1g ecu don't really have any problems detecting knock.

We may not be talking about the EMS but we are talking about the actual functuality of the sensor. Its pretty obvious that the AEM engineers believe that the 2G sensor is superior to the 1G sensor in terms of sensitivity; some people might want to be able to use a 2G sensor in their 1G for that reason. I just wanted to see if the 1G DSM Link offered that option.

If you actually look over the knock control functions of the 1G ECU, it will become apparent that the syntax could be improved on; be it 1G or 2G sensor dependant. While the 1G was developed to use a 1G sensor (imagine that) it (the sensor) could definitely be improved upon, which is why there is a more sensitive 2G sensor in the 2G's ;)

As far as the AEM EMS goes, I guess that there's a lot of monks out there that pray alot and one of the most famous ones is Shepherd. :)

That's right, we're talking about the functionality of the sensor when used with an ECU designed for it.

AEM has no place in this discussion.

Whether the 1g knock detection can be improved upon or not is irrelevant to the discussion of DSMLink.

If you think the 2g knock detection is so superior then just put a 2g ECU in the car and be done with it.

After all, the knock sensor filtering is ECU circuitry not just ECU program code.

Also, since you mention John Shepard as an example of how well the EMS works, I will point out that he doesn't use the DSM version of it (last I heard) in his car.

So, unless he has changed, his success with it is not a valid example.

You're right and the AEM wasn't used in this context to be used to argue an argument, but instead as a source of information. Those engineers have done their homework and have shown that the 1G sensor isn't as 'accurate' as the 2G sensor. End of story.

I disagree. The DSMLink is marketed as an alternative to an EMS therefore I'd like to see if it has comparable knock control functions to one. Secondly, I wasn't asking whether the knock control functions are 'improved' upon but instead whether the 2G knock sensor could be used to see more information per amount of time compared to a 1G sensor.

While this may be true, all of the AEM boards are basically the same with different connectors and maybe some extra drivers that are relevant to the plug and play vehicle. John uses a honda unit to use full coil on ignition functions, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure that he can get the same results he's getting with a DSM unit if it were available at the time he switched to it, and if it could drive 4 coils instead of 2.

I'm not going to sit here and argue about stupid semantics or irrelevant small details. All I wanted to know was if one could use a 2G knock sensor with the 1G DSM link for obvious reasons. All you had to say was no, without derogatory commentary, but I understand its in your nature. Thanks for the thorough details on how the knock control sensory works and have a happy Thanksgiving!
 
If you are that worried about using a 1g knock sensor with a 1g DSMlink setup, why not just buy the AEM and get a 2g knock sensor? Just curious why a 1g knock sensor would be such a bad thing to use with a 1g.

To try to put a quick end to your question - NO - you can not use a 2g knock sensor with the 1g DSMlink. This was something I asked about early on in its development, and it is not a possiblity now or even in the near future.

I'm already running an AEM in one of my Talons and the 2G knock sensor works nicely with that setup.

Any idea if that saveable memory so if your battery ever dies it keeps the settings will be available for 2g's? Id rather hold off and wait to buy if thats going to be included, instead of buying now. THanks.
 
There is hardware on the 1G and 2G ECU boards that handles the knock sensor. It is different for the 1G and 2G knock sensors. So no, you can't use a 1G knock sensor with a 2G, you can't use a 2G knock sensor with a 1G. And I would suspect that a 1G knock sensor wouldn't work with an AEM, either, since it was designed to work with a 2G knock sensor.

Either way, the 1G ECU's version of knock control does work. People have been using it for years.
