DSMlink to lap top problem

I just purchased a new lap top to tune my car via DSMlink. It does not have a serial port so i got a USB to serial adapter. everytime i try to do anything with the DSMlink it says IO invalivd commport......im assuming that means communication port as in it doesnt reconize it thru the USB. Anyone using this type of set up or had problems with the same thing and getting the same message? anyone know a fix? I spent a lot of money on this lap top and i am not going to just going to go buy a new one Thanks for any help-----dave

Go into the dsmlinks menu and designate the port to use. It will probably be set on 4 but it needs to be on one, or something along those lines. Good luck.

The option to select a port is gray and wont let me change it. It is set on commport 4...i dont know what port USB are cuz i didnt think they were designated to one-------dave

If you have a registered copy of DSMlink, then you should be able to get into the DSMlink.com forums and everyone there can help you.

Did you install the software for the usb to seriel converter? If the software is not installed it will not work correctly.

If you right click on My Computer and go to Properties, then the Hardware Tab and go into the Device Manager, go into Ports (COM & LPT), and the USB > Serial adapter will pop up there when connected. In the proprties for that device, you should be able to configure what COM port it uses. Set it to whatever DSMLink likes, but it's strange that you can't change it in DSMLink. I'm using an adapter too and I never have problems with it.

I have the software installed. I have gone under all those folders and the cable shows up and says working under commport 3. The DSMlink used to be stuck on commport4 but since i installed the software its also reading commport3. but it still will not connect. and i still can not change the port under the DSMlink. I guess i wont be running at NOPI in richmond tomorrow or no test and tune tonight since the TUNE part wont work

Get someone near you to help you out that knows computers. I am fairly certain that you need to be on com port 1.

i have the link in both of my 1g's and one use com 4 and the outher uses com 7. the bigger problem is the db9 to usb adapter u have probally can't support the data flow for the 1g. i tried 4 different one's and the only one that worked is the keyspan adaptor from comp-usa(39.99). get this adaptor and u should be all set. u can give me a call if u need more help thanx steve 508-415-8281

I have link on my 1g. I had the same problem. Get the keyspan usb to db9 adapter. It will then work. If not, then I nkow your next problem. Make sure you install the cd that comes wtih the usb adapter, .

I just looked through the dsmlink tuning manual and it does seem that you more than likely need a diff. cable like the others said. The last time I put the link in a buddy's car, the cable worked fine, but I had to do what I said before.
