Should dsmlink be able to connect to the ecu with the engine out of the car? I really wouldn't think there would be a problem with connecting to it but maybe there is something it must have to work. I'm sure someone on here has had first hand experience.

No joke. That's a requirement whether the engine is in or not. For some reason i can't connect to the ecu. I've done it thousands of times with the engine in, but this is the first attempt while the engine was out. Any fuses that could prevent this from happening, as i have relocated my fuse box to the trunk.

Are you asking a question, or....?

You're saying the engine is out...how are you giving the ECU power?

Yes the engine has been removed. I am giving the ecu power by turning the ignition "on".

My brain just put all that together. I have no idea why it/I assumed the ECU was out, too.

No the ecu is in the car. Didn't know if i could have fubbared anything up with the fuseblock relocation that could cause me not to be able to connect to the ecu.

Possibly an engine ground?

I know on my old wrx the engine needed to be grounded to complete the circuit.

No i'm not sure i'm getting power to the ecu. What is needed to send power to ecu, where does it come from. The grounding point in the post above seems the most logical to me, but i figure someone on here would know exactly what is needed. The laptop hasn't changed as this is the only thing i use it for. It will connect to my lc1 with no problems, but not to the ecu.

You should be able to hear the MPI relay click a few seconds after the ignition is turned off, which would be the first simple thing to listen for. If it's not getting power, the ECU probably isn't either.

Just use a voltmeter and check the power coming into the ECU. I forget the pin numbers, but I'm sure there's a diagram floating around here somewhere. You could also check for 5 volts on several of the sensor plugs on the harness to see if voltage is getting fed to them from the ECU.

It may also be possible that certain sensors have to be connected for the ECU to function properly, but I'm not sure of that. Sounds reasonable though. :)
