DSMlink antilag system. Is it really that dangerous?

I've heard people bitching about the antilag system DSMlink offers saying that you'll blow your turbo etc etc....

But I want to hear the truth from the pros:D. Is antilag really a turbo killer like people say? Is anybody using antilag on their rides and do they fear blowing their turbo because of it?

I've used DSMLink for years and have had no issues with Anti-lag. I've even done a couple 20 psi launches on my old s16G setup just for giggles.

I think the kind of anti-lag that most people think of is the kind rally cars use for the entire race to keep their turbos spooled. In that case, yes, it is very harsh on the turbo.

For the everyday Joe with Link and a daily driven DSM, it'll hardly ever be used. I haven't even hooked up my clutch wire yet, though, so I haven't felt what it's like.

It's meant for racing purposes, and most of us are only occasional racers. I can't see how the occasional use of the anti-lag feature would cause any major damage to the turbocharger. It boils down to how often it is used.

DSMlink's website also states that their anti-lag features is not the full-on WRC style antilag system. So it may not be as harmful as the real thing.

DSMLink has 2 different features which people may be getting confussed. One is launch rpms or studderbox and the other is antilag. While the studderbox shouldn't have any real downfalls of using it all the time, antilag WILL. Antilag allows you to advance the timing enough that the fuel actually explods at the turbine wheel instead of in the combustion chamber, this is what spools the turbo. If you do it every once in a while your turbo shouldn't have any issues, use it all the time & you will be looking for a rebuild. Common sense should tell you that an explosion in the turbine housing is going to be hard on a turbo.

If its being used for drag racing then dont worry about it at all, unless you live at the trackand beat the ever living crap outta your car.

Now if you were to use it for race or all the time like WRC cars then of course its not going to be good.

Have fun, those launchs are going to be awsome and enjoy the flame show

Maybe I'm misunderstanding this antilag concept but it seems like the feature would retard timing to some degrees ATDC, as opposed to advanced way BTDC. If it fired as the exhaust valve opened (ATDC) then it would send the explosions and hot stuff into the turbo. Am I wrong or right? I'm very interested in this now.

From the source (DSMLink user guide)

The control parameters for ALS include a starting RPM point, below which ALS will not
be activated. The user can specify the ignition advance value to use during ALS
operation (a value between 3 and 10° ATDC works well) and a percentage of fuel
enrichment to apply. We’ve not seen much difference at all with fuel enrichment, but
your mileage may vary.
