Ok, so I've been tearing into this 1992 Laser AWD and finding things that are completely retarded, and fixing them along the way.

So, first problem. Previous owner did a "budget" FMIC install, and it's total ass. So I ordered up a universal IC pipe kit with a knockoff BOV of some sort. The PO had it venting to atmosphere on his home made setup (HKS gen 1 knockoff?), and I'm looking to do it right when I get the kit in next week. Got this kit cxracing.com: Blow Off Valve and 2.5" BOV PIPE Adapter Welded, Matching Silicon Hoses and Clamps, and I don't want to vent to atmosphere. So how would I go about hooking this up correctly so it won't do so? I'm completely new to turbo gas engines.

Second, one of the axles is busted, are the OEM replacements pretty good or should I look to upgraded units? (not sure the extent just yet. PO informed me of it during the sale. Not too worried, but if I decide to keep and fix the car instead of just doing the swap it's good info to know. I had to go to 1k HP half shafts on my SRT8 thanks to the stockers being beyond weak and breaking @ stock power levels. I'd like to avoid that situation on the Laser).

Fuel pump was bad so I bought a WB 190lph installation kit (I won't be running anything bigger than a 16G, and only shooting for ~300whp. Which, with new injectors and the pump it looks like it's doable), I see some people on here claim it needs a higher rate FPR, and some don't when running stock. Do I need to worry running it right now with the stock (working) FPR?

And finally, I'm doing all the basic maintenance on the motor right now (I've ordered: New water pump, new acc. belts, new timing belt, new balance shaft belt, new BL bearings, new timing belt idler bearing, new hydraulic tensioner, and valve cover gasket set. And the oil change stuff). Am I missing anything? Should I look to replace any other wear items while I'm throwing these on?

Apparently the motor was rebuilt ~13k miles ago, found a ton of receipts in the glove box. No idea why the PO half assed everything else on this car though. So hopefully I can get those issues listed above ironed out, and I can finally decide if I want to restore this Laser, or just swap the motor into the MightyMax :)

The OEM axles should work just fine for you with only 300whp. The stock FPR will hold with a wally 190lph. If you were to get a 250lph you would need an AFPR as it would overrun the stock FPR, but with a 190 the stock one is fine. If you're going to replace all the belts and bearings may as well do the pulleys and the harmonic balancer just to be safe. If you end up swapping the motor into another car, or are pulling it out of the laser anyway, then get a balance shaft eliminator kit and remove the balance shaft. This eliminates the chance of the balance shaft belt breaking and tearing up your timing belt.

+1 to what the previous post says, and I would like to add that BOV is a piece of garbage. Get a stock 1g BOV, or I can sell you one just like what's in that picture for $30 with a 90 degree curved pipe. I have already fixed all the leaks it comes with, and JB welded on the bottom nipple that's going to fall off shortly after you install it.

Ps. You recirculate it by running the BOV outlet to your turbo inlet pipe.

Right on, I've been looking at getting the balance shaft delete kit. I've already ordered everything else, but I'll add it on anyhow. One less thing to worry about :)

I kind of figured the BOV in that kit would be junk, I bought a 1G crushed BOV locally this morning just for that reason. (Wanted a stock unmolested BOV but I only found these).

Hrmm, I don't see one on the intake that's currently in the car...

This is what the mess looks like currently (I'm also ditching the pacesetter header... And fixing whatever splice job is on the sensor for the intake):

Looks like He Tee'd the BOV line for a boost gauge? That's a No No. Relocate that line to the Fuel pressure line. remove that T and link that line back together.

Other than that.. you're on the right track. Good. I love Lasers.

Also, get rid of that "hard intake pipe" and get a proper one or a stocker one for now. That thing not only looks ridiculous, but I bet it absorbs heat like crazy. Looks pretty restrictive too. Also doesn't allow for you to recirc the BOV which is a must.

The only other thing.. what the hell is that Ferrari sticker doing there?

Yeah, I was trying to figure out why he tee'd the line. As for the intake, I'll be more than glad to dump it. Doesn't look like it's worth much, he claimed it to be an HKS (not that I care, shit was on the way out anyhow). As for the Ferrari sticker, it's actually a bunch of damn Pacesetter stickers... Guess he liked the header he got for it (I don't, the "ceramic" coating is flaking like mad).

Any idea why he would put those two inline splices on the sensor attached to the intake? Broken wires? Bah, the more I look it over the more annoyed I get with the half assed fixes. But for 500 (well ~300 for the maint items, 100 for the new CX radiator, ~175 for the new IC pipes, 20 for a crushed BOV and now 30 for a new unmolested BOV I'm still ahead of the curve on this thing so far).

Where is a good source for OEM body panels and such? If I can keep this rebuild / restore under 4k total (minus paint) I might just fix this bad boy up and use it as my DD instead of the MM.

a good place would be in the classifieds or any graveyard near you...

Local junk yards don't have very many, and the ones they do get have horrible (meaning ugly AND destroyed) body kits (like the one currently on this laser).

I was aiming more for reproduction stock units if they exist.

One place I'll suggest for your region is the Mitsubishi recyclers in Sacramento. I know it's a way off from where your at, but these guys seem to always have that hard to find DSM part that you looking for, and if they don't, call back a week later and they might have it. 1-800-695-4700. hit them up, see what you can find.:thumb:

Check on ebay or craigslist. U can usually find a couple DSMs getting parted out.

Oh I am :) Looking for a replacement CAI / stock air unit.

Thanks! I'll hit them up, hoping to get this car looking normal again LOL.

Ok, just got done tearing the "IC" piping out of the car... Wow, not really sure how the thing even held boost without it just popping off. Must have had leaks like crazy (rubber couplers were dry rotted, "welding" on the IC pipe had pin holes from shitty job, etc...), no worries new IC piping kit is in the mail.

Also found the line for the boost recirculation on the intake, was capped off. Easy fix, picked up a Greddy CAI kit locally for 40 dollars new (was still in the box, unused), don't need it now but might as well use it.

Found pretty much ALL the rubber hoses in the car are dry rotted, picking up some new lines @ autozone tomorrow (couple feet of it), and some new rubber fuel lines.

So, while looking everything over I found the coolant sensor disconnected and hanging there, cleaned it up and reconnected it. Also found these two connections behind the intake. Any ideas on where they go?

Anyhow here is a pic of the 500 dollar 92 Laser AWD, really wish they didn't spray the whole car in primer. It's pealing and the paint underneath is actually in great shape. Oh wells.
