Mine has about 140k and is running fairly well other than a few minor problems nothing wrong with the motor though.

97 GST - 110,000 And only major problems were with the automatic transmission. go figure.

Im new to the DSM community and the Forum.

Im lookin at a 95 talon AWD TSI. It has 120K on the stock engine. What problems should I be worried about other then crank walk as I read the FAQ. Also should I be concerned with rebuilding the motor before I do any other mods to it? I dont know how many miles these motors are good for.

I apologize if i put this in the wrong area.

Thanks
Mykal

If it's not on its third set of timing belts, it's time. Otherwise, with anything like reasonable use and maintenance, you're about halfway through the motor's life.

Or, you could blow it up in a week by over-doing it.

its kinda late in the motors life to do modes... any car with that many miles may go into a elder state if you will, instead of rebuilding look at getting a new engine if the frame is decent...

I am at 121,000 miles and the motor has had a cracked head, due to the previous owner removing it and not torqueing it down right and many other things he did. As for the mods man.. how does she run? get a leak down test done and anything 10%+ i wouldn't mod. otherwise if it comes back strong, go on ahead.

My motor leak-down is now all 0% across the board except one cyl. which is at 2%. I am still doing a rebuild because i plan on surpassing the motors limits on stock internals. So really man, it's up to you.

I didnt rebuild my motor until 180k. The car was still pulling hard and never had any problems. I did it for preventative maintenance reasons.

Start knocking on wood champ.

I have about 138k on my talon, and I have real low compression (Just near the service limit) and my engine runs rich with light mods.

Just a fyi.

I know I am lucky, I just change the oil and filter every 2200 miles and only run it hard when I need too. Just goes to show how tough the little 4g63 is.

Just about to flip 140000 Theres nothing wrong with putting mods on. Just dont go nuts. If it runs good just take care of it and it will last you. Id just start doing what youd like to it and if it dies it dies.

It truly depends on how the car was taken car of. I swapped a N/T motor in my 319K GSX. The motor had 138K on it and still had 189psi across all four cylinders. (192 is new!) Oil pressure was ALWAYS at the high mark on the pressure gage.

If the car has been modded most of it's life, yea sure, it'll wear out sooner.

An older Talon I had went 11's on a motor from 140K up to 197K when it finally launched a rod on the new owner- I still think he was practicing speed shifting and slammed it from 2nd to first instead of third though. Witnesses say yes, he still denies it- almost 2 years later :).

great thanks for all the replies. :)

Now I am a high risk driver according to my insurance company sooo...

Should I buy a Non turbo Eclipse/Talon then buy an aftermarket turbo to save on insurance and car price or should I just buy a turbo Eclipse/Talon, rebuild the engine and throw on a larger turbo and eat the insurance?

If this question has already been asked I apologize, I couldnt find it.

Mykal

you will be disappointed with a N/A eclipse man.. i think you should go ahead and bite the big one by getting a GST/X now. Insurance goes down a little at 21 and then alot at 25.. also take defensive driving and show your insurance company, they will drop it some more.

Same here. I bought the car with 170k on it.

so if i bought a N/T car and added a larger then stock turbo along with engine mods to it, I would be dissapointed? i dont understand that could you clarify a little more please. :)

i am 23 and ive take the defensive driving class.. there is no hope for me. as of now its around 7K for 6 months of full coverage on a truck for me. Im trying to save money wherever i can on insurance :)

you can't just put a turbo on... (2g DSMs)the motor is not a 4G63, it is a 420A(in short a neon motor). Now it is a good motor, but it is not boost friendly in stock form. You can build it up, but it cost less and is just less tweaky if you get a 4G63T(GST/X, TSi). I haven't even upgraded the fuel system and i run mid 13's, i just feel you will be happier if you have to do less to go faster.

thank you for that info. thats what ive been trying to find out. :)

well i used to race bikes on the street, i got caught one night. well over the speed limit. i also had many infractions of speeding, eluding, wreckless driving, etc etc... at various other times. I got my license back about 2 months ago after the 4th time of losing them. lets just say it was a hard lesson for me to learn that I just cause I had a fast car and fast bike that it didnt mean I had to open it up on the roads. lesson learned... i was young and stupid. :)

Yeah you don't want to buy a n/t if your purpose is to turbo it. It will take time and money to turbo it and then you'll probly be around the speed of say a near stock gsx/gst. The motor in a non turbo is a 420a and without building the internals you probly couldn't boost more than 7psi reliably. Go with the 4g63.
