hey guyz

yesterday I was installing my car alarm and the ground wire was spliced in the middle and I didnt notice it and when it was connected to the ground it touched the + part of the battery ( mainly the two clips or clamps that attach the alternator/head lights wire) and after a split second spark the orange lights in the headlights and the side marker lights wont turn off. only way to turn them off is to remove the + or - wire from the battery. I checked the 120 a fusable and all the fuses and I saw no burned out fuses or anything or didnt smell anything melting/burning. now I am desprate because onlything I can think of is that i mightve fried my switch but then again the switch works when I turn on the high beams, or the side signals so I dont know whats going on. please help me out guyz. I checked forums and ppl fixed their problem by replacing the fusable but mine is not burned so I dont know what to do at this poing.

help me out guyz.

Check the headlight relay in the engine fusebox (swap with another) to see if it's fused ON. Also if your headlights stay on when you remove the relay, you may have melted a headlights wire into touching a hot wire underneath the fusebox.

hiya

thanks so much for replying. I added you to msn earlier trying to get hold of you but I guess your msn is showing its wrong. but I will try now what you said and i will tell you if its working or not. just to clear it up. they high beams dont stay on all the time its just the orange lights in the headlights and the side markers.

thanks

hey I just went outside and checked it and i took off the headlamp ( headlight) phares relay and they were still on then I swaped them with the one on top of it and they still stayed on and it didnt make a silght difference. do you think that it could be that I fried the switch?

please let me know on how to fix this.

I really appreciate you helping me out.

thanks!

ok I took off the headlights phares relay and the tail lights relay off and my driving lights ( the orange lights IN THE headlights ITSELF and the SIDE MARKERS ) are still on and the taillights were also on the whole time that I didnt mention because I thought the problem was mainly b/c my alternater was not shutting off. so what else should I do? I am just hoping I didnt do anything bad because there are people on this forum that did the samething that I did but they just replaced their 100a amp relay and it fixed the problem but mine is not even burned out.

ps: I even tried switching the relays but didnt work the lights were still on.
any help is appreciated.

thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by "alt not shutting off". The side markers and tail lights are on all the time without the car running and ignition switch and light switch are off correct? Since the problem arose when you hooked up your alarm, try disconnecting the alarm (every wire) to see if it is now causing this.

Did you check ALL of the fuses under the hood? I bet you blew the alternator fusible link.

Did you replace the link with a new one to make sure?

luv2rallye : I just got that "alternator not shutting off" so they lights are staying on but its what you just described but the problem is that the alarm had only two wires positive and negative and after it sparked once i disconnected the alarm and it hasnt been touched since then. so I had never hooked up the alarm I was just testing to see if it worked just the siren when the + and - touched.

psychlow : yes I checked all the fuses/relays switched them etc. I mean under the dash board and the engine compartment. and I dont think its the 100a fusable because I took it to my job (advance auto parts) and they said it didint burn because if it was then the middle wire in the fusable would be melted but mine was fine and in intact shape ( just like the new one they had on the shelf) so I dont know I am totally lost at this point.

thanks for the replies guys. I dont know what to do now

Are you sure you removed the tail light relay (for testing) - not the tail light fuse? They are both in the engine fusebox. The relay is the black box (2nd from left in 2nd row up from bottom in the NT). Also try removing the green 40A fusable link in engine fuse box - the head and tail lights are on it so they should go off. You can also try removing the 120A fusable link strip for the alternator (careful not to touch any metal). The tail lights and side markers are not on that circuit so they shouldn't be affected (somethings wrong if they are).

good morning

today I went up to the car and removed the headlight/taillight relays ( the black boxes) the alternator fusable, the 40a fusable and the green fuses from the box and my lights were still on. all of those were out and the lights were still on. I dont understand since it should shut of when i take the relays/fuses out ? shouldnt it?

thanks

I've seen the same problem happen on saturn's before and it was the switch itself. Try playing with that hopefully it helps

hiya

I also think that I fried the switch and I am not sure what do you mean by play around with the switch? do you mean thats the cause and I should replace it? I mean I didnt smell anythin burning or anything so I have no idea what happened.

The column (light) switch just activates the taillight and headlight relays which supply power to all exterior lights. So if these relays are removed there is no way power can get to the lights unless a short is present. You must have melted the taillight wires into a power source. The most likely (and usual) place is under the engine fusebox where there is a nest of wires that connect everything to the relays and fuses. Remove the fusebox and examine the wires underneath carefully for shorts, melts, and broken wires. Usually it will be obvious. If you don't find anything, PM me for how to find a short.
