I'm about to use a spot weld cutter and attempt removing this bracket out of a parts car for install in my project, does anyone have any pointers or advice ?

I imagine this is going to really suck.

I bought the OTC spot welder kit along with a good dewalt electric drill. Im gonna practise on the bracket with busted studs and try to get the bracket with the good studs out in really good shape.

thanks for reading,

Kris

I made a couple youtube videos on my channel a while back. The long and short of it is the cutter makes it way easier than just using a big drill bit. The blade teeth do break off as you're cutting, and there's quite a bit of debris. So eye protection is mandatory. Even with my goggles, I got a hot piece of metal in the eye a few times. Not super fun, but I got the job done.

The instructions with the cutter will tell you to stamp a pilot divot with a center punch and hammer. If you're under the car without a lift, it's hard to get a good enough swing in for that with the limited work space, though. As a workaround, I just took a small drill bit and drilled about a fingernail's thickness deep divot in all the spot welds then switched over to my cutter.

I spent about 20 minutes dicking around with a drill bit and pry bar on one weld before I picked up the spot weld cutter. I spent maybe 20 minutes total on both carrier bearing hangers with it. Well worth the cost, in my experience.
