Ok so i know for sure this season that i will be running faster than a 14.00 and at my track the rules require that you wear a: "Helmet meeting SFI 31.1 or 31.2 or Snell 90 or newer approval". Does anyone know if this has to be a full face helmet? I really doubt that i will be doing any other racing besides just bracket and drag racing so i think i'll look for a helmet that meets these requirements and these requirements only.
Does anybody know about how much im looking to pay for one of these helmets?
Where is a good place to buy one?
Can it be a motorcycle helmet?
Any other input, tips, or suggestions?

thanks a lot for any help :thumb:

just look on craigs list for any helmet you want, it has to be full faced. call the guy up and ask if its snell aproved. most motorcycle helmets will be. its actually now 1995 or newer only, not 1990 at infineon, but try and find a 2000. these helmets are "good" for about 10 years. a 2000 will give you an extra 4ish years to use it. a 2005 will be expensive but will "last" the longest.

i just read the rules at infineon they say snell 90...

anyways does anyone know any snell 2000 rated helmet make/model that maybe i can search on e-bay or something? Im kinda trying to find a new helmet, color doesnt really matter, just not all crazy, a flat black or white or something will do.....

thanks again

anyone know any good helmets or any sites that sell em cheap? i think im just going to get something wholesale off ebay...

any help?

thanks

When it comes to protecting your brain.... cheap should never be said. A good auto racing helmet is going to cost $300+, a motorcycle helmet will NOT work.

Safety Safety :nono:
I like the impact myself... but to each their own.
how often do you hit your head while drag racing? how often are those few and far between impacts actually hard impacts? In my opinion, if your using your head, you wont hit anything too hard. and whats wrong with a used helmet? its old, o no.

slapnut thanks for the reply/links

do you know if http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pyrotect-Snell-SA2005-Auto-Helmet-White-XXLarge-XXL-2XL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6749QQitemZ8041931076QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW that helmet is a good one? I really dont want a full faced motorcycle helmet... this one is in my price range. ALso its a 2005 model so i can get many years use out of it.

Slapnut, you seem to know what you are talking about. Could you give me some feedback on this helmet? Are open face helmets like this allowed/ used very often? if this helmet looks good then im gonna buy it.

Like i said im a hobby racer... i go to the track to do drag and et racing to practice driving and see the times my car puts down... nothing more.

Thanks

HELMET RATINGS

SA Rated Helmets:
Snell "SA" (Sports Application) rated professional helmets are designed for auto racing and provide extreme impact resistance and higher fire protection.

M Rated Helmets:
Snell "M" (Motorcycle) rated helmets are designed for motorcycling and other motorsports. They offer slightly less protection than SA rated helmets.

What are the key differences between SA and M Rated Helmets:

SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not.
SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.
SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets aren't street legal).

How do I know if my helmet meets the necessary Snell specifications?
Always check your club rulebook to determine what helmet specifications they require. SCCA Solo rules, for example, will allow you to use the current Snell specification, as well as the previous two Snell specifications. So, for the 2006 season, you could use Snell Snell M95/SA95, Snell M00/SA00, or Snell M05/SA05 helmets. Snell M90/SA90 helmets would not meet requirements after October 1, 2005.

Some other racing organizations will allow you to use the current Snell specification and only the previous Snell specification, so read your rulebook carefully.

Also, be sure that your club will allow the use of Snell "M" rated helmets. SCCA Solo does allow these helmets, although some organizations that run high speed events will require Snell "SA" rated helmets.

IMO this helmet should be good to go
Open face helmets = your face not getting hit by wind / dirt and what not
Closed face helmets = your face exposed to the wind / dirt and what not

Im guessing that you have this backwards... but if dirt/wind are the only downsides of this helmet than im gonna get it. For drag racing you need to have the windows up so i dont think either will play a factor.

this helmet meets and exceeds my track's requirements so it should give me a few years of good use.

Thanks again for all the helpful info slapnut!

what i meant by that is, if u have no windows.... close faced, if you have all your windows to protect you from debris then open faced :p
