before i ask this question, which i hope does not get my posting priveledges revoked, I must say the following: I am a former RX-7 owner, and still love the the little devils, but had to move to a larger car. (family room) I tried a nissan 240 (LOVED IT!) but after a few small mods,(the easy ones, like cold air intake, hollowed cat) found it to be too small.... gave up on performance parts and speed and looked for a "good looking" and "rare" car.... found a 97 Tsi... black and beatiful, talked to friend w/ an eclipse...he gave his endorsement and Viola! $4800 later i was driving away... so now onto my question... i am constantly being told that the 97 Tsi only came in AWD, yet i can find no proof of mine being an AWD...so how do i know??? I am new to the whole piston engine scene, and know very little of anything but RX's....I am here to learn...so call me names and poke fun if ya want, but i need some answers!! I will be patiently waiting for my idiot of the year award.... in the meantime, thanks for the help.

P.S. After reading the forums, I must note that the "mitsu= gucci/ Talon=JC Penny" thing seems a bit off to me, the Talon looks way better and is very rare in SW FL... took me 3 months to find mine, and i am constantly complimented on my car, that NEVER happens to my friend w/ the Eclipse. (much to his chagrin) I also get offers for my car on a weekly basis, even though it's an Auto:mad: (looked so good, drove so nice, had to get it)

look under your car....does the exhust go straight down the middle of the car then cut left slightly out the rear? Or does it have 3 or 4 Major bens like 90 degree bends? You can also look for the drive shaft running along side the exhaust down the middle of the car.

look there all the pics of a2G underside you will want.

When I was in the Army they always said there is no such thing as a dumb question....
that being said, thats the dumbest question I have ever heard!!! j/k. All you have to do is see if there is a rear differential between the rear tires. My guess is for that price it isn't an AWD. But just go out and check for yourself. Welcome to the DSM community! Good luck and happy boosting!!

put your car in neutral, revv to 4k RPM and drop it into drive. If your head is still on then you have the FWD version.

dont do the whole drop into drive alot. Learn to brake boost.

umm, if you were looking for a larger car why on earth did you buy an eagle talon????

Anyway good luck.

yea thats the DSM way of finding out if its AWD but just look under the car for rear end\ driveshafts and save yourself from needing a new transmission

Ya easiest way is to look under the car. If the exhaust goes through the center of the car & gas tank, its awd. If it goes around the gas tank its fwd. If there's a drive shaft to the rear, a rear differential & half shafts going to the rear wheels its awd.

As for reving the car up & dumping the clutch not a good idea. fwd will just smoke the tires which isn't to bad but if its awd, dumping the clutch puts alot of starin on the drive train as there will be no slippage. If it is awd you want to rev it up and slip the clutch out. If you search launching here you should find lots of good info on how to do it properly.

...its an automatic.

ok so I now am absolutely sure I have a 97 FWD TSI, thanks for the responses, and again, sorry 'bout the dumb question!
