Door Label Says Viscious Differental? about it

Hey,

I have a 96 TSi AWD and my friends have 95 gsx and a 95 TSi AWD and they have this warning label on there driver door saying Viscious Rear Differental and on 2g's are there some open and closed?

Yes...you probably have an open diff....I have a 98 GSX with open diff.

You do have some options but they are expensive....you can purchase a Kaas rear LSD and it will drop right in but costs about $800.

You can also purchase an OEM rear LSD for around $500 but then you will also need new axles to fit that rear diff.

Most people that have upgraded for drag racing had said they gained next to nothing by doing it. Apparently when going in a straight line the diff is somewhat balanced and both provide grip. If you are considering the LSD for autocross that may be a different story.

I found that my rear open spins both wheels on a hard launch. It seemed to improve when I put redline shockproof heavy in.

What exactly does viscious mean?

It means you have a stock rear limited slip diff.

It means its not a locker and gives a little but still will engage when you pound on it.

Technically, the word viscous describes a liquid that is thick and does not flow easily, unless you were being sarcastic because he misspelled it...heh. This relates to the adjective viscous being used as a noun, viscosity. Viscosity is the measure of a liquid's resistance to flow (ie. motor oil, etc).

Like the adjective suggests, a viscous LSD uses a thick fluid between 2 plates (one plate being connected to one respective wheel.)

VLSD's control wheelspin by transferring power through the fluid. When one wheel spins, the faster plate spins the fluid, which spins the slower plate. This process causes a small delay, which is why many people don't care to use them for "performance", although they're a factory option on many vehicles (especially center differentials on AWD vehicles).

I don't remember ever seeing one on my diff, but i have the sticker.

the diff could have been swapped?

Not too likley the diff was swapped.. the car had 28k miles and was bone stock...The guy traded it to the dealer for a minivan cause he got himself some kids..
