[RESOLVED] what is this??? it says lsd

Yes, it is a LSD typically referred to as an "insert" type. I have been running one for 6 years and it actually does work although probably not as well as the more expensive units that are available. Many feel that it places too much stress on the tranny because of the physics of how it works and it may lead to early tranny failure (can cause things to literally break). Still, alot of guys have used them with success. The price makes them appealing. If your HP goals are not too lofty and you are on a budget then it's something to consider although a lot of guys will tell you to stay away from it. Do a search on lsd insert, there are quite a few threads.

if I remember right, it's installed around the center pin in the differential and uses spring tension to put outward force on the gears. This friction causes them to have to rotate together until the torque exceeds the friction holding the gears still relative to each other.

Some people use them, others don't. It's a cheap way to get some extra traction, but it's not a true LSD.

but it would help for the 200 bucks????

Here, save yourself $115.00 by buying this one -- it is exactly the same; have used them for years with no major problems.

You will need to remove your transmission from the car, and know how to dissassemble it -- it is not too bad, but it will require a few parts to be replaced (roll pins, end shaft nuts, etc.), along with some specialty tools.

When you have it dissassembled,
You would need to:
*Pull your front differential, and remove the bolts and ring gear.
*Pound out the center pin roll pin from the case.
*Slide out the center pin.
*Install the LSD insert the proper way (only fits in 1 way).
*Then reinstall the center pin, and punch back in the roll pin.
*Then pop off the "locks" on the LSD insert preloading the assembly.
*Reinstall your ring gear with Blue Threadlocker on the threads of the bolts. Torque the bolts to 98 lb/ft. in a star-pattern.
*Then you reinstall your front differential.
*Reassemble your transmission. Clean off the old RTV silicone sealant on all the sealing surfaces of the transmission case, and then use fresh RTV silicone sealant (Permatex ultra grey or black work great) on all sealing surfaces.
*Use new end shaft nuts, torqued to 109lb/ft and stake them into the indents on the input shaft and intermediate shaft.
*Torque the case bolts to 29 lb/ft.

Now you have directions, and have saved yourself $115.00.

As for results, it will increase traction of the front wheels and will benefit by using upgraded motor mounts. Downfalls are that it can damage the spider gears (tooth breaking off) which can then wreak havoc inside your transmission, or even better, go through the bellhousing leaving you with a nice leak and potentially a blown front differential. For the money, it is a good way to increase traction -- but it is not anywhere near as good as a Quaife LSD.

Good luck,

I think Tim pretty much covered it for you. Obviously there is quite a bit of work involved to install it since you have to drop the transmission.

My results have actually been pretty good. With my EVO3 16G and I can easily spin the front wheels in 1st and 2nd. I don't have any problem with only one wheel spinning.

It also helps in corner exit, but straight line traction is where I've noticed the most benefit.

well thanks everybody i really appreciate this so once i install it i will let you know my results
