First off props to http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123635&highlight=key and it's author Dreamchaser.

When I took the door apart to rekey it, the metal rod that actuates the lock when using the key was off. Without having to take off the other door panel, it there any kind of clip to hold it in? Or does it just stay there on it's own? I'd love to add a cotter pin, but there's just no room.
Thanks all.

Correction, it's the rod that lets you unlock the door from the inside using the handle, when it's already locked. I just put the door panel on and left the rod off and will fix it next time it's off.
I tried just leaving it in and it fell off after the first time unlocking it.
Chilton and Haynes didn't show any kind of a locking mechanism to hold it in, guess it's time to scrounge up some money for the factory manual.

I believe it's one of the places they use those goofy little plastic clip things that the rod goes into, the clip and wire-end go into the hole, then the clip turns to capture the hole. Check your other door.

If your talking about the retainers for the long rods at the lock mech, they are the plastic clips that Defiant was talking about. I'd first look around in the bottom of the door and see if there are still floating around.

CAPS says they should be:
Left hand door MU481193 Clip, Front Door Locking Orange
Right hand door MU481194 Clip, Front Door Locking Green

2 per side.
