Does this block need machined to use?

Hey wondering if this block needs to be machined before putting a head on and running it. My concern is the cylinder walls. I'm just not sure if they will clear up after running or not run at all. Thanks. Pics vv

Looks to be some cylinder wall contact. Would not be surprised if it slapped a little bit in there. Rebuild it to be safe at least. Bore and Hone and new replacement pistons are fairly cheap.

I'm going to say yes. I'm not sure if the cylinders will require any boring, but personally I would, atleast, have them honed out. Hot tank the block, and have that and the head decked for a nice even surface that you'll be positive will create a solid seal.

And that second picture kind of makes it look like an intake valve might have tapped the piston. Did you buy this or take it apart from your car?

I was thinking about buying it to put a head on it. But under the condition that it was run-able.. which it appears to be not. Thanks guys.

Also at BoredDSM, what pistons would you suggest in a rebuild project? Thanks

from the scoring I see in the cylinders, I will bet it will need bored

your Piston selction will depend on your budget for your build

if you have the block decked, make sure its done proprly and on the right equipment. Do you plan on running a MLS HG or a composite?

I was planning on rebuilding my other 6 bolt that has a spun rod bearing it (came with the car), since i have another crank and set of rods. Or I was going to buy a running one. On my rebuild I was thinking MLS HG and I was hoping I could re-use the pistons from the old 6 bolt.. I'll get pics of the cylinder walls on that one tonight if they look better then this one.

well you have enough parts to mix and match.... set the red block to the side.. and grab your other one... what kind of shape is it in? got pics? set the spun rod and crank from #2 with the red block

now you should maybe have a decent crank, a decent block, and 6 or 7 decent rods/pistions

Here are pics from the 6 bolt I have which spun a bearing. Cylinder wall pics vv

This engine (above) "ran" but had rod knock so I only started it up for a few seconds to listen.

Here are more recent pics I guess of the red short block I was looking at.

Just to avoid confusion as I stated before the FIRST 4 pics are of MY engine. and the LAST 4 pics are of a different engine, the one in the beginning of the thread. Thanks!

Yeah that crap looks like it is gonna have to be bored over.

If you can feel those scoring marks with your fingers then it needs to bored. remember were talking in thousandths of an inch. If you can feel it it probably needs to be bored.

neither one looks all that sporty... have them mic'ed, inlin of the wrist pin and 90* to it 3 points each way, top mid and bottom

ruel of thumb is if you can click a finger nail, bore it

Definitely some issues with your first motor. I just realized there seems to be some valve contact on the pistons too. I would go to Thedsmgraveyard.com and take a look at there OEM pistons or there OEM replacement pistons which are all pretty cheap.
