Does GM MAF rotation/clocking matter?

I know direction matters, there is only one way it can go - but what about how the sensor it's self is clocked? Like with the pigtail facing up, to the side, down etc. I've looked through a lot of pictures and it seems no one uniformly keeps the same position.

*edit* It usually doesn't matter if it's in a straight section of pipe, but it can make a difference which way it's clocked in some instances where there is a bend before the maf.

Thanks for correcting me Craig.

Actually, it can matter in some cases depending on how the air exits any bends before the GM MAF. There is a definite relationship between the orientation of the MAF's hot wire and laminar flow in the piping. It won't make much difference if there is a nice straight section of pipe before the sensor; but if there is a bend close to it, you may see quite a bit of difference between the MAF being oriented vertically or horizontally to the direction of airflow.

The effect will also be more pronounced if you have removed the mesh from the MAF, which a lot of people do for some reason. IMHO, you loose more from creating a choppy signal than you would gain from the limited restriction the mesh causes. Besides that, if you are flowing so much air that the GM MAF and it's screen are a restriction, then you should be on a speed density setup in the first place. :)

It probably won't change the average airflow reading a lot, but it can make a difference in how smooth the signal is. FWIW, I was able to smooth out a GM MAF blow-through signal quite a bit by simply rotating it 90*, with all else staying the same. This was on a MAF that had been hacked to remove the screen as mentioned above.

YMMV of course.

(sorry Matt :p)

Good good. That is what I figured. The airflow coming at my MAF is mostly straight, but thinking about how the airflow goes through it I re-clocked it 90 degrees and it felt smoother for cruising conditions.

My GM MAF didn't come with the mesh, you think it's worth getting another with the mesh?

Possibly, if you can find one for $15-$20. I seriously considered it before finally switching to SD full time.

Ahh. I was originally going to switch to SD (ecmlink) but so far eprom burning has been working out quite well for me. The funds I had saved up for that went to a transmission :(
