do i need a water pump

99 eclipse rs, 420a

im kinda a noob still at fixing my own car, so any help or advice is appreciated. driving today noticed my car running hot. pulled over found a crack in my coolaint resivore, it was bone dry i put some in it just to try and make it home, the car kept running hot. there was still cooliant when i got home and it was bubbling, there was never any smoke or anything and my car seemed to run just fine. my car would cool down as i accelerated, and heat up when i stopped, also cooled when i turned my hest/ac off. could my water pump have siezed when the coolaint drained out? if so where could i find a diagram or instructions (or if someone could tell me) on how to get to the water pump, timing blet, and whatever else i need to change or should change.

jsut to add on i forgot that there was a small amt of oil on the ground under my car, i didnt think anything of it at the time, though it was just that i didnt tighten my drain plug all the way, so i tightened it a little more. i dont know if that has anything to do with this or not.

To make this simple for you, get a timing belt kit, and a water pump, look on vfaq, or do a search, it can be your new best friend.

Try
*making sure your fans turn on
*do a complete radiator flush
*replace thermostat

if all else fails, replace the waterpump... if your new to working on cars, i would recommend having someone help you do the timing belt that has done one, or pay someone,

If your mechanically inclined and have the right tools, there's no reason you cant do it yourself... but doing things the right way is always best...

ps. replace the cam seals and crank seal!
