I think I'm going to need a new tranny...

Do that all fit all years from 90-99?

I have a 97 GST with a 6bolt motor in it.

Thanks! :thumb:

There are 3 different FWD trannys. 1990, 6-bolt, and 7-bolt. My buddy has a 92 Talon 6-bolt and he bought a back-up tranny off a 90 laser FWD and it wont fit. It's also a little different compared to my 99 FWD tranny. It you need tanny work, I wouldn't replace it with another used stock tranny. Have Shep rebuild it so you wont have problems again down the road.

or TRE - i'm at about 1000 miles and OMG has this thing never shifted so good. You'll thank yourself for having SHEP or TRE rebuild it. They make 'em shift better than they did from factory.

can someone elaborate more on this subject? Like which models use which 5spd FWD tranny's.

Will a tranny from a 94 gs fit my 90 talon?

no probley not, Im not sure but i believe its only 89-90 will work for you (someone correct me if im wrong along the line). 91-93, 93-94. They should all bolt to the motor, but it won't work because of the mounts are postioned diffrently.

I'd like to get a few more responses on that, my tranny needs rebuilt and I dunno the cost of what that would be (syncro's) but I did come accross a guy in town with a 94 gs parts car and he said $200 for trans shifter cables and shifter assembly, if it aint gonna fit, then I'ma have to bite the bullet and save some cash for a rebuild

This is the exact thing that I was searching for today.

A friend of mine had his 95-96 GSX totaled by an old man not paying attention. He has a lot of money in parts so he is going to buy another 95-96 and swap everything over. I have a 91 TSi AWD with a broken 5-speed tranny. He will have an extra 95-96 GSX tranny and I was wondering if I could swap it in. I read the link (thanks defiant) and it seems that it would work...

"Different transmissions are not interchangeable. Note that 2G transmissions are interchangeable with 1G transmissions of the same model number, but 2G transmissions have different internals and are generally considered to operate much better. Usually only minor modifications are required to fit a 2G transmission to a 1G engine."

Has anyone done it ???

90 have different lever arms, use different cables, and have a different shifter so they are a 90 only thing. You can change the levers on the tranny but it still may act weird. 91-94 are all interchangable. Some have different things that make them a bit more desirable but they will interchange. The 1G and 2G trannies will not just swap. They have different motor mounts on the top of the trans so it will be hard to make it work, thats why most dont do it.

I would just send my tranny to Shep and call it a day. i was in the same boat as you abotu a month ago. I bought a used tranny that would " never grind and gears and had 80K on it"
After two passes and a month of just driving to work it would grind into 1,2, and 3. After a weak of people thinking I cant drive stick I lost 1st all together. Now I am just sending it to Shep to rebuild so I never have to worry about it again. Moral: you never know what you actually have until it is to late.

I know 90's are the odd year, that why i was gonna get the shifter cables and shifter assemlby with the trans off this guy in town, $225 for all that dont sound to bad to me

remember - it's 90 and some early 91's. (i.e. some early 91 owners have found their shifter brackets are the same as 90)

okay, first of all i DO realize my bringing a 2004 post back to life, i'm tired of people complaining for starting a new post and not serching, well i searched and i need to know if a 1g fwd gs turbo transmission will fit my 97 gst because i know where a 92 tsi fwd is for $700 and tomorrow is my last chance to buy it before he scraps it. 5 speed btw

The answer is no. There wouldn't be any place to bolt up the front roll stop. There's no provision for it on the 1G tranny case, and the 7-bolt block doesn't have a spot either. 1G cars can run trannys of either generation, but 2Gs can only use 2G trannys.

What about one with a 420a motor, maybe not as strong but would they work?

Ok, the stock 420a tranny can hold up to about as much as the stock 4g63 tranny can i believe. the stock tranny on the 420a has been beaten on and tested at 300awhp and still be fine.

however... to answer your question NO. the 4g63 tranny and 420a tranny are reversed making them incompatible. the 420a has used the pt cruiser and volkswagen parts in the tranny not to mention the neon srt4 as well.

i was reading and i saw that a 96 gst transmission willl fit a 96 gs non turbo. if this is true will my a gs non turbo trans fit mine or are they the same as srt4 too
