DKS cams...shims?

So I just got my new DKS 264/272 cams in the mail. Figured since I was doing the timing belt now and new lifters, that I should get the cams outta the way since im in that area. What I'm wondering is, they sent me these shims to go with it. They said some people need it, others don't. Who here is running the DKS's, and used their shims? What were your other head mods?
 
O that makes sense with the high lift and the geometry. But I would think washers would float around in the bore too much...
 
I personally did not need to use the shims for my DKS 272's. All cars are different, so just follow the directions that came with the cams to see whether or not you are going to need them.

It has nothing to do with high lift or geometry. The cam is a regrind, which means they remove material from the base circle of the cam. The lifter might then be too short because of the material that was removed, a shim can solve this. The lifter has constant pressure on it from the cam, there is no way the shim is going to float around. If there wasn't constant pressure the rocker arms would just fall out.
 
Ok, cool. I was just wanting to see how common it really is. Next, I gotta figure how to tap the end of this intake cam. I know the dimensions, but am kinda scared of doing so since I don't know what bit material and all that. Anyone have any advice on it?
 
Hmmm I think I screwed something up. I was doing this all with the timing belt. So what i did was take all the timing belt components off first. Then I took the cams out. Now, I don't know how to align the cam gears. I don't have a clue as to how they should line up now.
 
Install the cam gears on the new cams. There are dowel pins on the cams that go into a hole on each cam gear. With the cam gear installed those dowel pins need to be facing up, and the timing marks on the gear need to be lined up with each other.

Well i got the exhaust back in...its 90 degrees off about. I guees it rotated when trying to break the cam gears loose. you think I could just move the crank to the middle of everything and then realign it from there? I haven't gotten the intake back in yet but i suspect itll be off too. Its not in yet since i couldnt find a hard enough bit to drill for the cas and need to take it to a machine shop.
