420A Different year 420A ECU?

Hey guys I'm doing a 5 speed swap on my 97 RS. I found everything I needed off a car at the junkyard but the ECU. Now my question is does the ECU have to be the same year as what is already in the car? Because I found a 96 manual ECU I could get. Somebody let me know, thank you.

ECU needs to be the same year, only interchangeable ones are the years of 98 and 99

The 96 ECU has different pin outs. I have 2 extra 97 ECU for manual transmission if you need one. shoot me a PM if interested
