Hi all, first post here

I'm beginning to plan a new project car and haven't quite decided on the drivetrain yet. The car itself will be a 1973 triumph spitfire with an all tube chassis built specificly for the drivetrain combo. (Its between a 4g63 awd combo or a turbo'd v8)

Here are my questions... I've done enough research to gather the 1st gen 6bolt is the engine to start with, but tuning is my question. I want to strip the electrical system down to bare basics but never really played with new tech stuff. Is there schematics and pin out diagrams readily available? How indepth is the computer? I mean.. is it reasonably reasonable to expect to rip out the motor/trans as a "stand alone" unit, without having to go complete stand alone efi? Or will I be fighting analogue signalcheck engine light demons forever?

My ultimate goal is roughly 350 to 400hp, but plan to "just get it running" first.

I'm a new car technological newbie... but have much a desire to learn, and would rather "do something different" than just another turbo'd V8 british sports car. This is obviously not my first car build, or even my first 4cyl turbo triumph build, LOL, its just the most ambitious and scarey in the "is it feasable to make it all fit and run without a huge wallet" sense.

In my opinion if your going for 350-400 horsepower the 4g63 is the way to go. It will be cheaper, lighter, ultimately faster and of course get way better gas millage. You shouldn't have to buy a stand alone for this as the factory ecu is not integrated in the same manner a 2011 car is although it would give you a lot more tuning options and probably allow you to get a little better fuel economy. Of course there will be some integration besides motor and tranny like the fuel system for example but it wouldn't be that hard if your a do-it-yourselfer.
 
The 4g63 awd would be something in that car.


I'd recommend getting a complete parts car for the swap. Makes life much easier and is cheaper in the long run.
 
that sounds like a really cool build. hopefully you go witht the 4g63. Its a great platform to build off of and 350-400 is pretty easily accomplished.I agree that a parts car would be the way to go. parts for these motors are readily available and generally pretty cheap. If you decide to do keep us posted.
