Duncan,
Im wondering whats the difference between the eprom ecu and regular ecu?

Thanx

i expect steve will answer this better than i, but the eprom is a chip on the board that can be removed and replaced with a different one. the chip contains all the fuel maps, timing curves, injector sizes etc. so it is a way to roughly tune your car. of course you will still have to do the fine tuning with an afc, datalogger, etc. hope this helps

Pretty much. It also contains gauge info and fuel cuts etc. The first several thousand DSMs each year had them in 1Gs so that the manufacturer had an easy way to go back and make changes if needed.

okay so if you have the chip you can desolder it and replace it with the one from DSMLINK.com and if you dont have the chip on the ecu what can you do get dsmlink ot put it in?? or you have ot find an eprom ecu to use that is what confuses me?

EPROM stands for Erasable and Programable Read-Only Memory. It allowed engineers to erase and re-program the ECU's throughout the first year of the new body style in order to work some of the bugs. Having that 'Erasable and Programable' option, allows us to add new features to our stock ECU's such as no-lift-to-shift and selectable lauch RPM. As well as provisions for upgraded injectors, a higher rev limiter.

Basically, in 95 the ECU's were actually EPROM's. And after they felt that they perfected the EPROM, they started making the ECU's.

You've gotta start with an EPROM ECU, and you can't just yank the EPROM off the board, you have to de-solder the connections and have little holes made (ie socketing) so that you can remove and replace the EPROM without tearing the connections off the board.

If you don't have an EPROM ECU then you can't (cost effectively) use it with DSMlink or any other upgrade chip. You have to find an EPROM ECU to replace yours.

On an EPROM ECU the external EPROM contains all the software. The other ECUs use what's called a masked ROM CPU, where the software is programmed into the CPU chip during the manufacturing process as it is built up from silicon. A bug in the code or a tuning change to the maps makes the whole batch of CPUs junk so they wait until everything is "perfect" before commiting to producing a million of them. The lead times from order to chips is measured in weeks to months depending of the manufacturing process and EPROM ECUs were used to fill the gap.
