So I have access to turbos of all different sizes, I work at a salvage yard for semi trucks, so their are turbos of all sizes here, garret, holset, paccar, etc now my question is how useable are these turbos in our applications, they range in size and I’m not to knowledgeable on them but I understand well how turbos work and the functioning parts that pair with them. Secondly is there a way to use vgt turbo

Not sure about other brands but Holset turbos of varying sizes have been used extensively on DSMs. Checkout the Holset FAQ thread here:

Anyway so after doing some looking around most of the turbos on newer semis are vgt, I’ll keep my eyes open for the ones requested, but I’m more interested in if we can get a vgt to work on our cars, now to my understanding the computer on the truck utilizes the onboard stored air to work the fins in the exhaust side to allow the turbo to spin up fast and then after its spun up to maximize the amount of air compressed, now I might not be 100% right about that but it got me thinking if we could hose in a vacuumed line from our compressor side back into the vgt mechanism to tell it to adjust the fins therefore making more boost and therefore adjusting them more until we had a kind of mechanical vgt, I’m sure there’s more problems involved with this, but to my understanding the computer controlled vgt is more for economy applications, maybe that’s why it’s not commonly done. I’m hoping someone with more experience with a vgt can chime in and maybe correct my understanding of how they work or we can maybe figure it out, might be cool having a functioning vgt quick spool up and big boost! Anyway feel free to put in your two cents, I like the idea of having a bunch of brilliant minds to bounce ideas off of.

So after checking out your link and doing some more research I stumbled upon this article,
    http://www.stavtech.co.uk/home/the-ultimate-holset-turbo-guide-probably
It’s a good read and pretty much explains how to rig up a holset vgt on your car, seems easy and seems almost free using a spring and some trial and error. Looks like it could be a good option for us. I’d love to see someone try this out! We have a good bunch of turbos I’m sure my boss wouldn’t mind selling, let me know and I’ll keep my eyes open!

The Detroit 50 series uses the 4202 style of either Garrett or Borg Warner, the vgt isnt of much use without a way to control the vgt system itself.

You should check out the article I linked, it explains a simple way to utilize the vgt, I thought It was pretty clever they use a spring to hold it in the closed position and as the boost builds up it over powers the spring, it’s just a trial and error finding a good spring tension for your driving style, seems cool in concept I’d like to see it verified, when I’m ready I think I’m gunna experiment because of the access I have to them

I did a similar thing on a fiero once to add a second throttle body to the 3.1 intake. I had it set up with a vacuum pot and spring so at idle the vacuum held it closed and as u accelerated the vaccum drops and the spring pulls open the throttle. It worked pretty decent for a experiment.
