Working through the possible causes to my slow spool at the moment and have come to my dual wastegates. First off, yes they are XS Power ones so I'll prepare myself for the backlash right now. Do bear with me though.
One of them is working fine, but am having a slight issue with the other. The diaphragm inside has been replaced with a genuine Tial one, but when the car's idling or cruising I can hear a quick tapping noise from the wastegate, and a small amount of air coming out. Obviously if this is happening when the car's boosting too then it's going to result in a pretty big loss of spool methinks.
I'm thinking it's the piston not seating perfectly against the bottom of the wastegate (that faces towards the exhaust manifold runners). A friend had a similar issue and did some lapping of the piston and got it seating perfectly. First off, does this sound like a fair diagnosis? And secondly, how could I confirm it when the wastegate's off the car?
I know I should really get a pair of good Tial wastegates, and when I have the cash I will, but I'd rather fix this one for now if at all possible.
Cheers for any advice you can offer
