To be honest, I think you owned yourself when you left with damaged packaging. I would have definitely taken pictures, even a video of it. Let the management know.. & file a claim just for fun to see what they do.

:barf:

This is going to be a tough battle to fight.

You also better talk to who sold you that block. That score in the cylinder is CLEARLY not from UPS and nicks may not be either. The previous owner didnt take the time to spray the deck down with a penetrant. Nor did he bag it and pack it right. If it was packed right It would have never happened.

It is the fault of ups... this is exactlty why you get 100$ worth of insurance for free, and have to pay for anything over that.

At the very least you should get a 100$ check from ups. Either you or the shipper will anyways. You might have to get a partial refund from him to cover the cost of machine work to fix it.

i dont think UPS is gonna throw around a crate with a block in it like if it was a sack of potatoes LOL i think the seller may have told you one thing and sold you another.

I will say otherwise. I used to work for FedEx and loading the trailers, you have to stack and be quick since you generally have multiple trucks to attend. I would throw and drop packages into the belly and hear things break. Mainly to catch up and because I didn't care. I know others did that as well.

You screwed the pooch knowing the packaging was damaged and not inspecting it before signing for it. Signing basically means the package is approved by you for pickup.

yeah but i mean come on its a big heavy crate. it does make sense though if stuff was thrown onto the crate which was poorly packaged. but even then itll have to have been some pretty heavy stuff to do that kinda damage and even inside of the cylinder

When i managed the shipping dept at a local auto parts yard we had so many horrible issues with UPS that we pretty much stopped using them for anything important be it electrical parts or anything large like a block or trans. The guys running the hubs are the most careless and abusive towards the packages that i've ever seen. And they have more excuses for why things aren't their fault in damages that you almost have to get their "guidelines book" and make sure you package things perfectly to their spec.

for isntance, anything electrical has to be in one box with x amount of packaging and then put into another box with so much packaging between the two boxes or damages aren't their fauilt etc..etc..

we got to where we only used them for things like tail lights, interior trim pieces and things that were really light weight and packaged well enough that it didn't matter if they punted it across the room or not (and i think that's what they do besides playing bumper-fork-lift while unloading anything heavy)

The nicks in the block i can't make out, but the cylinder is definitely from running usage (it your talking about the dark vertical line in the 2nd pic) Might be best to find a core block and re-use the pistons, rods, crank. Not sure what ot tell ya, but your machinist could give you the best answer on wether to run it or not.

Looks like the guy you bought it from lied to you. Pretty plain to see...

Use your brain, if only for this one time.

If you had to take the tape off of the cylinders to reveal the marking on the piston wall (Which was cause by poor PTW and or improper break in btw. *That or the motor was beat*) The obviously it wasn't UPS who did it. The markings on the top are also questionable, but there is a simple fix to at least determine if UPS did it or not.. Was there any damage to the tape in those areas? if not then that means that just like the scaring on the piston wall that those marks were there prior to sale.

What's worse is that it sounds like you bought a motor without getting detailed pics of it first... You're luck it has anything the seller mentioned in there..
