How dangerous is it to buy a 95 talon Tsi with 104k mi? This will be my first DSM project car/daily driver so i need it to be reliable. It is completely stock. Thanks.

i got my car with 119k on it ........then rebuilt it but that was by choice it ran fine but for who knows how long after what i found in there eeh. My biggest thing when buying any used car especially anything that has any amount of anything that can be consided power is the person who owned it before you and imagine how they would be driving it. but thats me :thumb:

Overall, buying any used car is a gamble. There are numerous steps to take while inspecting the car. For instance, compression test, inspect plugs while their out, check for shaft play in turbo, while test driving check the clutch for slippage, closely look around engine bay to see if anything was recently installed/de-installed ask questions if found and definitely ask when the last timing belt job was done and what all was replaced during that job. You will also have to judge the way the car runs, does it sound strong or is the there a slight miss, etc. I am sure there a other fellow dsmers here with a longer list of inspectable items but you will be the judge.

Good Luck,
Steve

That's not hideous mileage in this age of miracle motors. Along with fly's comments, the more you can find in the way of records, carfax, registration and owner's history the better. Talk to the mechanic who's worked on it, if you can. Bring an older friend who _knows_ cars. Have the current owner take you for a drive so you can see how he treats it. Check for odd tire wear.

There's a hundred things to look for, but being stove-bolt stock is always a good sign.

Other than that, we just can't tell much from here.

mileage doesn't really mean as much as it used to, in these cars its more or less how well the person took care of it. If its the orignal motor and it runs fine at 104K then most likely its been taken care of.

Take the advice of the other posters, it might be worth it to shell out $20 to get the vehicles history.

my car is "stove bolt" stock, and it needs a engine! I just got the bi*** to.

but it was cheap as hell, and i wanted a "project"

just so you know, if the car is cheap and you think, oh nice i'll have a project think twice, and think hard i wish i had.

140k on my 95 awd ,bone stock and still running strong.

well, ive hit the same prob again, all these high milage cars....97 Tsi w/136k...but beautifully maintained plan on gettin it this weekend and officially enter the DSM fam.

Mileage should not be the only reason for rejecting a used car. DSMs are said to have problems all the time, but it is just how well they are taken care of that determine the life span. Use common sense and see how well it was maintained! Use that as your reasoning.. not mileage... And if you are planning on racing the thing, rebuilds work wonders on an engine! :thumb:
