Checking base timing 6 bolt in a 2g. When I align the cam gear notches at TDC the harmonic balancer notch reads about -5 on the timing belt cover (about an inch clockwise of TDC mark). Any ideas what is going on here?

Try aligning the crank marks then check the cam marks. Sounds like the timing belt is off a tooth, or the blancer could have slipped

Thanks for the replies and link.
When I align the dampner with the T on the timing belt cover the exhaust cam notch is a tooth above the intake. How do I diagnose if one of the cams is off a tooth or if its the dampner slipping?

Everything only has about 5k miles on it

Pull the balncer off and check the crank marks on the crank gear and on the front case. align those and if the cams line up, the balancer has slipped.

You do not adjust anything to check the damper alignment with the engine off. If you install it and it's not lined up, there's an issue. If it lines up, you're good to go.

The only marks you should be aligning are cam, crank sprocket, and oil pump sprocket. If you're still unsure, take a picture with these 3 marks aligned (to prove it to us), then install the damper and take another picture showing the mark's relation to the timing cover.

If you did a BSE you do not need to worry about that mark.

If you still have the BS, yes pull the cover and check all marks.

can't he just pull plug 1 and insert a long screw driver through the plug hole to check if he was at TDC, crank-wise?

and then compare with the cam gears marks...

then put on the damper then check with the timing cover timing mark?

instead of pulling the timing covers?

did i make sense there? :idontknow::banghead:
