so i want to be able to avoid cops w/ out a shiny exhaust, pass smog in CALI (keep stock cat), and exit all this air at the same time. Figured one of those electric cut outs would work. Now, should i juss cut out my stock downpipe or get an aftermarket one (bigger diameter) and cut that? or would it be fine w/ the stocker? i'd like to get a bigger dp but i can't seem to find one that'll bolt onto the stock cat. Most ones i see eliminate the cat. Sooo.. think I should continue looking for one, or juss make the cut out on the stock downpipe? Would there be that big of a difference w/ the stock than say a 2.5inch w/ a cut out? Thanks.

It would probably a noticable difference between the two... but I think you would get some gains from just a cut out on the stock DP

damn.. i don't wanna eliminate my cat.. i juss wanna bigger downpipe and cut out on it.. BEFORE the cat.. i mean i've seen downpipes that eliminate the cat.. but then i still gotta pass smog.. so what i really wanna change in my exhaust system is juss the downpipe and keep the rest stock besides the cutout.

Mmmmm, cutouts themselves are illegal here in Cali...sooooo, your still not gonna be emissions legal. Now if they don't look you could pass, but...

I am currently in the process of getting my cutout installation finalized. Mine is welded onto a 3" Tseudo downpipe that removes the cat. It sounds funny...=). The only problem I'm having is with clearance as its hard to fit that cutout in there without it hitting something or hanging too low. I'll get some pics and stuff this weekend hopefully once its done though.

If you want a cutout, just get the downpipe, and swap downpipes when you go to emissions. Thats the easiest way. The hardest part of swapping them is gettin the downpipe off the damn hangers....at least the one I have, but its still worth the whole 30 minutes max it would take you...

I wouldnt worry too much about them catching a cutout thats under the car. Especially if he is playing it smart and running the stock cat/exhaust, giving a smog nazi no cause to look under a car.

If you are worried about smog, just find a smog place that is down the street from a race shop and go after 5:15pm. Much friendlier then.

ya.. smog don't really check under the vehicle for visual around here.. especially cuz of the stock exhaust so i ain't really worried about visual. so does your tsudo downpipe bolt directly onto your stock exhaust w/ the cat? do the flanges match perfectly? so you're having clearence issues? where do you suggest i put the cut out at? ya man.. i'd like pictures of it if possible.. this is gonna be my next mod for sure.. besides suspension.. is your car too low or something? i'm thinking of gettin the tein s tech springs as well.. lemme know ! :thumb:

thanks.

The tsudo eliminates the cat. It fit perfectly from the first day I installed it. I think the clearance issue's I'm having is because we're doing best guess jobs at getting the position and angle of the cutout in. I plan to get it up on a lift sometime this week and me and my dad are gonna get some good measurements and stuff then weld it in there. The best place to put it would be at the bottom of where the downpipe comes off the 02 housing I think, but you need some good welding skills to get that right =). Least thats where I dreamed it was best, but I have the Y pipe so I just used that. As of now is tucked very nicely under the car, but is up against the floor so we'll probably just rotate the y pipe down a little bit. I took it out for a ride tonight and it was pretty fun. Sounds like crap for regular driving but like a race car when you floor it. =). Think tractor/muscle car sound if your just driving regularly...LOL. The S-techs have been great drop wise. Though I think I will probably change to Eibachs or a who other setup eventually just to get some stiffer spring rates, but if you just want it for lowering, they're nice and ride well with the illuminas.

Ok, here are some pics of my DMHPerformance Electric cutout on my 97' GST. Theres still a little bit of adjustment we are going to make so that it sits under the car better, but it won't be noticible visually really so basically this is the final product. The only thing I wasn't impressed with was the Y pipe welds and the "hole" they cut where they welded the pipe on..which you can see in one of the pictures...

I'll try to get some movies up when I get a chance so you can hear how it sounds and such.

Hmm i would have to agree with the VERY VERY shitty cuttin of the hole there. your 3in opening looks like it head down to 1.5in. time to bust out the dremmel, anyhow the ONLY other shit i see is that you have a nice wire for the cutout sittin right in front of the dump.. hmm may melt some stuff get that lil guy tucked up..

run a 3 inch dp, with one of these http://www.atpturbo.com/root/releases/release091004.htm and the your stock exhaust. should work fine.

Does anyone know if the wastegate on that is adjustable? If its not its going to open as soon as it hits boost which would be annoying for any smallish turbo like a 16g. You could always run an MBC to it but then you have to factor in the cost of insulating the hoses with some heat wrap and i would even go as far as heat wrap then stick it through a stainless steel hose.

Yeah we already opened up the hole pretty good on the Y pipe. It did look like crap though. The wire is not as close to the opening as it looks in the picture. The camera angle just makes it look like its sittin on it but there is plenty of room for it. I was worried about all that stuff melting (2nd useless 02 sensor is sort of right after it too) but the angle of the exit allows it to miss both.

Oh and btw to anyone who may be paying attention, yes the pic of the downpipe + cutout thats off the car is backwards. That was the first orientation we had it with it pointing towards the passenger side and it didn't work out for me, so the one on the car currently is towards drivers side.

did u guys make the y pipe yourselves? how come u didn't juss get it w/ the electric cut out?

Uh.....????? It is an electric cutout, and no I did not make the Y-Pipe. It came from DMHPerformance with the crappy hole in it.

oh ok.. cuz on the site you could get the electric cut out with or without the Y-pipe. didn't think it'd look that crappy so i figured somebody welded that together for ya. You would think a "reputable" company like that would have decently looking products.. figured you juss got it w/ out the y-pipe to save money.. oh well.. how's it workin for ya so far.. and why'd u reverse it around from the passenger side to the driver's side?

Its working good so far. I reversed it because it seems there is a little more area to work with on the drivers side (if you bend the heat shield up a little bit) than the passengers side. I initially wanted it on the passenger side because I didn't want the exhaust blowing on the 2nd 02 sensor but it wouldn't as good I believe on that side. I wanted to keep it up pretty high off the ground so as not to take it out goign over a speed bump or something.
