I am looking to buy a 3" turbo back exhaust for my car but, I am debating whether or not to go to the local shop and have a custom one made up or buying a aftermarket one. I was wondering since it is a custom exhaust there is not R&D done on it and I would have no idea what it may sound like or how well it would work. On the other hand I was looking at this system on ebay and know what magnaflow sounds like, but have never heard of this company. Anybody have this or heard anything on it? I really dont wanna spend $450 on a APexi cat back and still have to get the cat and downpipe. Thoughts? Comments?

Most exhaust shops dont' do mandrel bends and only do crush bends.
If you want mandrel bends, they have to order the mandrel bend pipes and weld it for you.

magnaflow is for trucks usually. I think there a brach of flowmaster. They have a deep rich sound to all mufflers and exhaust systems. But remember you only see them on trucks for the most part.

No Guessing - if you don't know the answer, don't reply - bad advice can be worse than no advice (no "I think" or "I guess" or "I've heard").

right above were u posted that rule was...

Correction magnaflow systems are very nice.. and are made awesome not related to flowmaster in anyway.

IMO mangaflow>flowmaster. i would highly consider a magnaflow setup

Sorry to kind of hi-jack the thread but are there any places where I could hear different kinds of exhausts??? If not does anyone at least know where I could find one of a thermal muffler? Ive been looking everywhere but I cant find one, I would hate to buy a cat back and be dissapointed with it.

well a couple of months ago, someone started a best sounding exhaust thread. it got really huge. u can search and find it. 1 person finally posted a video clip w/ sound of a thermal on dsm. fell in love :D . i'm ordering one next week :thumb: :D. but if you find the thread you can PM the user and see if he still has the clip. (btw the link to the clip no longer works, that why i'm saying to email him).

all i did was say is i think there a branch of flowmaster. That in no way will harm your car or performance so no need to try and make it seem like its a big deal. There is plenty of other registered people on here that do the same. But they just add "but dont take my word for it" at the end.And i wouldent post i thinks or i guess if it was something dealing with the engine, because that can be very bad and no need giving guesses on engine questions.

Thanks im about 90% sure I am going to get that system. On another note is a 3" system tight to the car or does it hang alot, I have kyb struts and goldline springs I was just wondering about bottoming out and damaging it. Thanks again.

you can probably have a decent 3" exhaust fabricated at pretty much any shop (just ask them if they can get 3" piping for an exhaust). As was said above, most only do crush bent piping, unless you supply the mandrel bends yourself. You can buy a couple mandrel bent 3" U-bends on ebay (~$50) and that should provide you with enough angle adjustability to be able to fabricate the whole exhaust. Pick up a muffler on the internet for another $50 or so. Once you pay for the unbent piping and labor, you are probably looking at about $100, making a total of $200-$250 for the whole job. If you can weld, it can get really cheap. I personally go for the straightest pipe possible so that I can get the best performance; I don't care much about how it sounds. Not to mention that if you are turbo, they have a tendency to muffle a lot of the sound emitted by the engine simply because it gets baffled by the turbo as it exits out the exhaust. I'm not sure about DSMs in particular, but my experience is that pretty much any turbo car will get much quieter when under boost.

I went through the same debate. I ended up going custom... bought a 90 degree and a 180 degree 3" Mandrel bend ($50). Got a Megan Racing 3" Inlet N1 style muffler ($65).Bought an Evo III O2 housing along with the Flange for the downpipe ($75). Local shop charged me $225 for labor and the 3" flex section. The guy spent allot of time grindind the flange to open it up to 3" and spent a good amount of time getting the stock O2 housing out and installing the EvoIII one.

So all in all the custom one cost me $415... obvioussly thats including the bigger O2 housing and the labor to switch them and open up the downpipe to go full 3" from the turbo back.

There is a thread on tuners about exhaust notes. It's been around awhile, so i'm not sure how many are still up to date, but here it is.

Personally I have an N1 catback and feel it was well worth the price. Not too loud and sounds deep and growls nicely at WOT with the RRE 3" DP and Cat combo.

Go CUSTOM. I've always had good luck with those systems. I purchased a Tanabe cat-back (brand new $150) cause it was cheap and it would smack against my trail arm. I like custom because you don't have to worry about flanges coming loose. Also, you can easily eliminate the resonators (noise suppressors). I spent $350 for a complete system:

HKS Hiper (or Hyper..whatever) Muffler (3" Inlet)
2.5" -> 3.0" Downpipe (w/flex pipe)
3" Exhaust piping w/mandrel bent angle pipes

It sounded great (not loud unless I punched it), didn't rattle, there are no "bolt together" sections, and I even angled out the muffler just the way I wanted it. :thumb:

I sold it for a stock looking muffler (same piping) to avoid any fix-it tickets...

what the hell!! if you go almost anywhere besides midas they'll mandrel bend you a heart made of 3"stainless. any descent exhaust shop will do it. i would buy a downpipe, cat and muffler and let a good exhaust tech take care of the rest. you'll have a 3" true setup from the turbo back for pennies on the dollar compared to a purchased setup. the exhaust shop i go to fit my stock downpipe to a 3" pipe, welded on my cat and muffler, mandrel bent and hung the system with new brackets, and gave me a peppermint upon paying them 160 bucks. 160 bucks + cat and muffler = peppermint and 3" cat back exhaust any McDonald's employee can afford. don't leave till you get a peppermint from the guy.
