Cruise Control turns itself off

So I was driving home yesterday on the highway for about 45 min with my cruise set, and a few times after going over a few bumps in the road, the cruise control would turn itself off. At first I thought I might be accidentally tapping the brake, but the next few times it happened, both of my feet where not near the brake pedal. All I had to do to turn back on the cruise was to flip the cruise switch to resume. Is there anything I need to check or do to solve this little problem? Thanks for the help.

check your brake light switch. mine was improperly set and would just randomly go off while driving or lightly tapping it.

There is a switch on the clutch as well that sometimes go out of adjustment.

Check both switches on clutch and brake pedals...and I can safely bet it's the clutch switch that needs the adjusting.

Vacuum controlled cruise systems were used in the earlier days of cruise controls for both domestic and foreign makes for carbureted motors before FI injection . There was a round bottle of sorts under the hood and sometimes mounted under the hood itself that was an actual vacuum resovoir that held the vacuum from the carburetor, or throttle body which locked the carb butterfly in place via diaphram vacuum motor - all receiving signals from a pickup on the transmission output shaft and the module would send this received signals to the diaphram linkage in the vacuum motor to either release or bring in the throttle arm..and the bottle aids in helping this vacuum motor bring in the arm.

Quite a reliable system..as long there were no vacuum leaks. Thus, zenk1's suggestion was quite valid - yet funny, with him having a 95 DSM, he would recommend this suggestion - being his system is the same as ours..

Your car will cut the cruise control once the brake or the clutch pedal is depressed. The brake cut is so you can stop in an emergency and the clutch cut is so you don't rev to the moon if you tried to shift with the throttle open. There is a button/switch that gets depressed once you press the pedals. Crawl under your dash and look at the top of your pedals and you can get a good idea of whats going on.

yea, check your clutch when it does that. See if it needs to be popped out. Sometimes when they are partially pushed in the cruise control will shut off.
