I replaced the box and made sure that both switches (brake and clutch) were being activated. The rubber rings are still in tact, but I did not check continuity. Sometimes the cruise will come on and work for a few seconds then the light will shut off. If I try to turn it on again after that the cruise light on the dash will light up momentarily and shut right off.

What could it be? I make long freeway trips frequently and I need cruise working.

Check the vaccum lines for the cruise control system. I had the exact same thing happen to me and it turned out to be a dried out and cracked vaccum line to the cruise control box on the firewall.
