crank seals

i had my car at mitubishi getting the ball joints checked out and they told me that i need to have my crank seals changed because they are leaking oil they also told me $500!!! how hard is it to change these seals?? has anyone done it?? i have a 98 gsx...thanks

In order to replace the front crankshaft seal, you have to do a Timing Belt Job.
I did every seal on front and on top of my engine.
It's not hard if you have the tools, patience and general mechanic know how...

And the rear seal requires you to drop the transmission, clutch and flywheel.. either way its not exactly what i'd want to do on a nice weekend, but it can be done just as long as you have as stated above general mechanical know-how...

really the hardest part on the rear seal is doping the trani. then on the front just make the tool here Crankshaft sprocket tool if you have the ability to. or if your goin to get a new timing belt wrap the old belt around the sprocket and put a pipe wrench on it in the opposite direction your "torquing" and hit it with the impact. just be sure to mark or kno the timing marks on the cams and crank so you can put everything back into time. then use a steering wheel puller to get the sprocket off. then use a fine blade flathead and shimmie it carefully so you dont scratch or mar (spelling) the crank shaft. then tap the new seal in with a large socket and then reverse process. make sure to use red loctite on the sproket bolt and torque it to 87ft lbs i believe it is and re time it and you should be golden... i like to manualy spin the crank after its all in time and make sure nothings hitting anything.
