I am in the middle of doing a BSE/Timing job and I want to make sure I did this right before I seal back up the engine. I replaced my main crank seal (seal that the crank sprocket covers up) and when Installing I cleaned the oil case and all quite well. I decided to put a small ammount of RTV on the back of the seal to hold it in place. Seal went in fine and is seated.

I was just reading that all you need to do is put a little oil in the seal then seat it. Was I wrong/will it cause problems to have the RTV on the back? I did a bit of RTV on the Oil Pump Sprocket Seal as well to hold it. Still turns fine, and I see BSE Stubby move so it didn't lock up the shaft.

Thanks in adv.

Ive heard of people using a light film of RTV on the outer perimeter of the seals to help it seal. You should be fine. They are only required to be lightly oiled before installation, but I cant see RTV being a problem. The only way I could see that being a problem is if you used too much RTV.. you only want to fill any tiny impurities with the rtv. So many people go nuts with RTV on everything and thats not always good.
I can only see either one leaking if the inner sealing surfaces on the aluminum are scratched.
