2G Crank position sensor keeps dying

So lately I've been eating crank position sensors :D and I thought it was because it was a aftermarket sensor. So I ordered a OEM one and boom! Car just died. I tested the car with the OEM sensor for 2 days and it was working perfectly but I needed to adjust the clutch because it's dragging.

So I proceeded to rev it to seven thousand rpms and back down. It dragged, so I adjusted a little more and reved again. This time it died at six thousand something rpms and wouldn't turn on at all. This is the third time this happens. Any ideas?
 
No signs of impact?
Abnormal vibrations?
What's your voltage look like when your reving the engine?

Actually yes, when the car idles, it shakes like no tomorrow. Goes away around 1k rpms. No signs of impact. My old backplate had smears on it though it was also lightly scratched. I don't know the voltage when I rev the car. Can't find out now LOL
 
Steve is covering the basics - no one wants to type out "crankwalk", so before anyone got carried away it's important to try and find out why you're destroying sensors like that. If it's electrical, that's one thing, but if they're being mechanically destroyed then you know what you must check.

The scuffs you said you saw on the plate would be suspect to me.
 
I was trying to cover as many possibilities as I could think of and based on your reply we might have a path to follow in the diagnostic tree. Sounds like you have to eliminate the worst case first since there are some signs in that direction.
 
So today I finally got around to taking off the oil pan. Upon opening I was greeted with a piece of metal in the oil pan and metal shavings in the oil girdle. Check it out.

Sorry to hear that. I was hoping that wouldn't be the case.

I was kind of expecting it, the motor has 149k. I'm pretty sure the kids that used the car didn't baby it. Anyway, I have to leave again tomorrow out of town, when I get back I'm going to take off the mtb, and measure the crank endplay. I was looking under there a bit today and couldn't really notice anything out of the ordinary, but then again, I'm no mechanic :D

Should be fun building it though, when the time comes.
