Hey guys, did some searching, but couldn't find anything on my problem. Just started driving my 1G again after about a year of it being parked. It still starts right up and runs fine. However, I failed the idle emissions test horribly and that has never happened before. Went home, checked CEL code, and I'm getting a crankshaft position sensor code. I read somewhere that a problem with the distributor may cause this code to show. The car drives fine, but surges under idle for about 15 seconds after coming to a stop. Has anybody had experience with this before? And, if the sensor needs replacing, how much of a pain in the ass is it to do?

Thanks guys...

There are likely thousands or threads on idle surging. First steps after fixing /replacing the CAS to address the CEL would be more basic maintenance, clean the TB and clean/check the ISC, replace the PCV, fresh plugs, check the timing and set the BISS. If that fails to eliminate the surging, then it's time to start looking for air leaks. Depending on how old the O2 sensor is, it may be over due for replacement. The car may have been in limp mode from the CAS problem but usually failed idle test is cause by a bad or sluggish O2 sensor.

Replacing the CAS is simple assuming you can find/afford a good 90 one. Hand crank the engine to TDC, unbolt the old CAS, line of the timing marks on the new CAS, install it, set the ignition timing.

Thanks For the info. I'll go ahead and start with replacing the plugs, wires, and O2 sensor. I guess worst case, I'll have to replace the CPS. Thanks again.
