OK, so my manifold gasket had a small leak. the car was running fine other than an exhaust backfire at low speed wide open. no biggie i thought so i bought the turbo and manifold ganskets($$$). i pulled off the turbo and manifold. while im cleaning, i fin cracks EVERYWHERE!!. a long one on the inside of my turbo hot side and 3 on my manifold. my car is a 95 tsi. my question is ....... can i replace the manifold and turbo with ones from a
1990 tsi? will the 1st gen manifold and turbo work? can i use my 2nd gen o2 housing? will the oil and coolant lines bolt up the same. what should i do? i have a $200 budget to fix. i can get a good turbo and manifold for around $150. help!!!!!!!

Bolt pattern is the same but the 1G exhaust openings are much larger. Will the manifold bolt up to the head? Yes. Will it work well? No. Should it be done? No. You are looking at getting a replacement exhaust manifold for starters. You can buy a kit to put that turbo if it is the stock turbo on. The coolant and oil lines are different between 1Gs and 2Gs. That is taking for granted that, that is a stock 14b turbo on that '90 exhaust manifold. You are kinda dead in the water from the exhaust manifold. The 1G exhaust manifold isn't going to help you right now. You could possibly pickup the Turbo if it is in good condition; no shaftplay, no end to end play etc provided it is in good running condition. Hard to say without taking the turbo apart?

The turbo if it is a 14b will be able to bolt to the 2G manifold. Buy four new turbo to exhaust manifold bolts to ease the installation. New exhaust manifold to head gasket, new turbo to exhaust manifold gasket. You are going to need a j pipe to the 14b turbo as it is laid out different than the T25. Not very expensive. You can buy a kit to put a 14b on a 2G. Not very expensive. There are some great Vfaqs for it. I personally don't like to re use any old hardware fittings or hoses etc. Save yourself grief in the future but i realize you're on a tight budget. The kit you would be using to put the 14b on the 2G is the same one that you would use to put a 16G on a 2G. The turbo is the most expensive item. Just because the turbo looks good or decent doesn't mean it's ok. Kinda a crap shoot there. check for shaft play;side to side and end to end. check for metal shavings condition of any oil that may still be in it... etc. Possibly buy a used 2G manifold? Check DSM trader for possible used parts or even the parts forum here on this website.

2g manifold are upgrades for the 1gs its very odd that yours has cracks in it. ive got a 2g manifold on my car works great i had two 1g manifolds and they both had cracks

ok, i alrady have brand new gaskets... all of them. so what does the kit include? the turbo im buying from a 9o tsi, you said is a 14b? i know how to inspect the play and oil so if its crap i wont buy. would i be better off buying a 16g? a manifold is about $130 at the parts store. where can i get this kit?

It would be a very solid turbo for less that $500? I haven't priced them out recently. Any of the DSM vendors offer a 16G installation kit for a 2G. Right here on DSM tuners would be a great first place to look. If they don't directly sell it they can point you in a good direction to look. That is/was a very common turbo to put on a 2G as an upgrade so they are tons of Vfaqs for the install parts etc...

ok, so ill go for the 16g. but could somone post a link to this conversion kit, or list what all it includes. im geussing it has a j-pipe, and the oil dran adapter or somthing. i also was considering this manifold eBay Motors: DSM Eclipse stainless Turbo Manifold T28/16g/20g/14b (item 380006795595 end time Mar-21-08 14:17:18 PDT)

there are sevral availablonly because it has a 1-year warranty. i know these are more prone to cracking, but if i cant crack it in a year than i doubt i will break it. as for the 16g turbo, that is the evo3 turbo? should i get a small or a big 16g?

I'm not sure what the policies are on here as far as recommending other websites products. I am sure it can be found on this website somewhere but I know of one place that definitively has it pm me.
