Core plug problem?

Taking apart the front of my motor for a timing belt, water pump, and seals... and noticed this:

Is it normal for that core plug to not be fully pressed into the front cover?

That is not a freeze plug. It is where the front balance shaft went. Someone has removed them from your engine. YOu are good to go!

Correct, that's part of the balance shaft elimination, blocking off where the upper shaft would have been.

Ahhh... ok.

I knew the B/S was removed, but didn't know that was actually part of it. Looked like a core plug working it's way out... errr... looked like that PITA problem I used to see back in my small block days

So anyway... it IS in as far as it should be?
